Tell me this is what I think it is!

I found this and a musketball today within 10 feet of each other, and both from a depth of about 10"

Obviously I'm hoping I finally landed my first war of 1812 button...but I know there are several artillery buttons with a similar design.

The backmark is "I. McGowan London"

Appears to be in pretty good shape, and the shank is still intact, although a little flat.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Wess, it could be 1812 or it could be CW. Sure is nice. Here's a link to a site I Googled up that says the maker made buttons in the "early 1800's":

I could not find a I McGowan in Tice's book, but there are two J McGowan from London, one from about 1794, that was a John MCGowan and a James McGowan from 1800-1853.

However, maybe I McGowan was before those two, since your button is what I think is known as Post Revolutionary War button, meaning late 1780's to 1790's and most certainly could be a War of 1812 button.

I have pictures of very similar button from that period, but not identical.

Again, beautiful button, excellent find.

and thanks for the information! Well that is my oldest button to date for sure...and hopefully I'll be adding a couple more this year! A war of 1812 button was in my top 3 on my wishlist this year...all that remains is some spanish silver and a gold coin! *haha* Lofty goals I know...but ya just never know!

You don't remember talking to me in the chatroom and on the forums oh say 6 months ago when you were still swinging the White's pro. Maybe because my name isn't listed with my username anymore. My name is Scott Morrell from Tennessee in the USA. You, C.C. and would talk about our adventures alot before the chatrooms froze up and didn't work for awhile. I'm glad you changed over to the Explorer and have had great success with it. I have been using my Explorer II now for over 20 months and wouldn't trade it for any other detector! Well maybe a Explorer III. HH and continued success!

Of course I Remember you! *haha* I just didn't recognize the nickname! Good to see you're still kicking around the forums! It's been a while since I've talked to you actually. IT's too bad C.C. got the boot from the forums.

Yes, getting the Explorer was the best move I ever made! I couldn't imagine using any other machine to be honest, and I'm not sure how I ever did without one. Don't even mention an Explorer III *haha* As soon as something like that comes out, I'm buying myself one! I can't imagine having an XS as a backup unit *hahah*

Thanks on the button! I think I was going on about finding one in the chatroom with you guys all the time *haha* Hopefully there are more to follow.
