Temperance In All Things

Temperance sometimes appears to be an outdated word. We often equate it with movements and organizations that focus particularly on alcohol and tobacco. We think of the old songs promoted by these movements and sung by the early church, warning young women about the disgusting habits of those who chew and spit tobacco. We almost caricature the whole issue, and we avoid mention of the word in our sophisticated age. It is sometimes thought easier not even to talk about temperance. While we fail to talk about and instruct in temperance, some in the church are being overcome by things that were once thought to be problems only of the world.

2 Peter 1:5-9 (New King James Version) Fruitful Growth in the Faith "But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins." How should these words be applied to all areas of our life, particularly when it comes to our health habits? How can we take this biblical admonishment and turn it into reality for ourselves?

Temperance is so much more than not smoking cigarettes, taking illegal drugs, drinking alcohol, or even tea, coffee, and soft drinks. And that is because even good things, when taken to excess, can cause problems. What are your work habits? Do you keep reasonable hours? Is there time for God, family, recreation, physical fitness, and service to others? How much time do you spend sleeping, or are you working all the time? Or, on the other hand, do you sleep too much? Too much sleep, as well as too little, can have negative health effects. What about diet? Maybe you do not eat pork or even chicken, but are you piling your plate so high with food that you can barely get up from the table when done? We know sunlight is good for us. But too much can be a cancer-causing agent. Exercise, too, is important. Many do not get enough, while too much can hurt your body. Even sexuality, while a gift from God, can be taken to excess, with negative side effects. True temperance teaches us to dispense entirely with everything hurtful and to use judiciously that which is healthful.

Look at all areas of your life. How temperate are you? In what areas do you need to change? Might you even now be suffering some negative effects from wrong practices? Why not seek some help in making needed changes?

AMEN!! Temperance is something that needs to be talked about in our world. It's a shame so many things are becoming taboo and "not nice" to talk about in our churches. Temperance does not always = popular. Travis and I don't smoke, drink, party, cuss, etc. Because of that we don't fit in with many of our old friends, heck even some of the people we go to church with. When a person makes the decision to follow CHRIST with his whole heart, many things have to change. I don't desire to be like the world in any way-don't want to do anything that would be a stumbling block to others or that would prohibit me from being a role model. If a person has trouble with temperance, they may need to reconsider their salvation. GREAT post!

Thanks Martin and Liz for the good posts! Yes, if we are to be faithful servants and saints of Jesus, we need to follow God's Holy Word giving us instruction in what to do and not to do! There is a right way and a wrong way in most everything, for our Lord tells us so in the Chapters and verses of His Holy Book....the absolute truth for all mankind! If Jesus doesn't come back and get His own before, I know that the ungodliness and sinfulness in America will change....just like it did after the Roaring Twenties and then the Great Depression hit, bringing people to their knees to God Jehovah and prayers for a better life!

The Israelites knew and obeyed God, untill they became fat and lazy from His goodness to them! Then they began to lack when turning to other god's to worship and forgetting their One and Only God, Jehovah! They then suffered the consequences for sinning with their cities captured and the Isrealites placed into slavery until praying for mercy and turning back to the true God of heaven and earth! This seems to go in cycles, when the younger generations don't learn what they should in Temperance, kindness, love and of The Ten Commandments with greed and sinfulness in the Gov'ts and nations, as the old saying goes, What goes around, comes around, and then the cycle of obedience and/or sinfulness is repeated!

But I believe our Savior will call us Home at the end of the age as we know it , soon, and then the greatest tribulation will come upon the Earth and upon those left behind after His catching away God's faithful Children from being in it with the unsaved suffering unbelievably! Takes trials, sorrows and hard times to get people to turn to God or back to Him by believing in His Son, Jesus, even in our own lives! His 2 X 4 between the eyes to get my attention really hurt, but I praise Jesus for forgiving me of my sins, as the Lord and Savior of my life! My only sorrow is my not accepting Jesus by faith sooner! But better late than never! May God Bless! Amen!
