Ten Hints and Tips to help you out with your Deeptech Vista in the field.

10 hints and tips for successful hunting with your DeepTech Vista series Detector.

1. Coil choice, always make sure if you have an optional coil you take this with you to the field, if Detecting on new sites you never will know if you need to use a sniper coil to work around the iron or a large coil to get the best depth possible.

2. Sweep speed, never rush when detecting, especially when searching around iron, even though the Vista series are very fast machines you can improve your chances of success by sweeping the coil accordingly to the ground conditions, much iron slow sweep speed, low to no iron a good pace swing will grab you more depth.

3. Ground balance, this can play a big roll on signal quality, but you may not be able to achieve a spot on ground balance depending on the ground conditions, some sites a spot on ground balance can’t be achieved for such reasons as.... extreme ground minerals and iron particles for the main reasons with inland searching, but the nearest you can get to a silent ground balance will give you the best results, if you’re searching in hard stubble a correct ground balance may cause falsing so in this case start to turn the ground balance into the red area whilst tapping the coil against the the hard stubble, you will get to a point where the falsing stops, normally around the 2pm position, your machine will still have solid performance but you may have to investigate them scratchy high tones due to you’ve shifted from the correct ground balance to prevent falsing against that hard stubble.

4. Discrimination, this plays a huge roll on signal quality and recovery speed also depth, high discrimination can help also the same at low levels depending on your detecting goals, if you set your discrimination high then your Vista will be more stable and predictable in the iron and give you more indications and even block out objects like coke and foil but at a cost of losing small gold and small items not only in iron but in general searching, but if searching for the larger sized coins/items is your goal then running a higher discrimination will give you the best chance of finding these kind or items with digging less trashy metals and inferior quality items, at the other end of the scale running the lowest possible discrimination you dare will give you the best chance of finding smaller desirable items around iron and give you the best recovery speed also best depth, so if your goal is to have the best chance of finding items such as the tiniest hammered coins and Celtic staters then keep that discrimination as low as you dare.

5. Tone ID, now with most of the Vista Detectors you have the option of running two tones or a single tone, many items in ground like iron can sway a targets audio, for instance a large coin next to iron may sway your mind into thinking it’s a misshaped or large piece of iron, so running your vista machine in single tone would just give you that high tone and no low tone making you to dig and investigate, yes you may have just dug and seen iron but depending on the intensity of the audio compared to the size of the iron remove that iron piece and sweep over the area again, it maybe just that your not hearing that iron and hearing a big good item that was sounding off instead being in single tone, this leads me now on to tip number 6

6. Target separation, this applies to single tone and two toned Vista machines, when you hear a broken tone in single tone or a brash loud tone in two tone mode you really need to work that signal to see if the targets/tones can be separated, it maybe the case you get a broken tone or mixed tone from sweeping at three different angles around the target but there maybe at one point of direction that tone/target can be split into two, don’t just check from the normal angles, really work them targets from all angles to find that split in the audio, also switching to all metal may help further to split the signal audio wise, (I must say that if you do find the split it may not always be a good target next to iron, it might just be misshaped iron but always check for the best results)

7. Reducing the power when iron is in abundance, when you’re in heavy carpets of iron don’t over power the signals to the machine, it’s the same as when driving a car in the fog, if you use high beam you make your vision worse, this can be said the same for the signals being received back to your detector by overpowering them iron signals, depending on how much iron depends on how much you need to reduce your power, but if your Vista machine is sounding off like a Tommy Gun over the iron then reduce that power right the way down, don’t over power them iron signals so it blankets the smaller good signals with iron tones.

8. Coil discipline, it’s easy to swing away with your coil not horizontal to the ground or your coil to high off the ground, when out on digs I see many pendulum swingers, they really are missing opportunities to maximise their finds potential, keep your coil low and level also consistent across the whole sweep.

9. Digging more items deeper, it’s easy to take them easy brash high toned targets and I depending on sites do this myself so hands up there, but when these sites signals start to fade over time don’t think the field is done, start taking those little whispering signals, they may even be very slightly borderline mixed weak irony good signals, you need to remember that when targets are at the edge of the detection limits they will be very week on the audio front and not always clear, use boost if your Visya has this feature to bring that audio out a little louder, just because the target don’t sing out loud and clear it don’t make it a poor quality item, it just maybe on the fringe of detection.

10. It’s a numbers game and I don’t mean a VDI one, the faster you can retrieve and move on to another target the better your chance of getting them good items, it maybe the case you don’t find nothing interesting in your whole days digging but the more targets you dig the more chance you have to find that signal that makes you smile from ear to ear, just because you don’t have a VDI don’t get disheartened on a dig full of so called high end VDI machines, whilst they are picking and choosing targets and wasting time you’re taking anything that produces a high tone.

11. I will leave this one blank for now as I’m sure I could give you many more hints and tips when my mind wakes up from looking at a phone screen constantly whilst tapping this wall out so to be continued......
