terra cotta

hot rocks and terra cotta.... what is terra cotta mineral that sets of a metal detector I know that it is bronze in color

Clays are made up of various substances - aluminum silicates, ordinarily containing impurities, e.g., potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, or iron, in small amounts. If the clay you are dealing with is a bronze color, it probably has a high level of iron oxides, which are picked up by the coils transmitting/receiving coil. A good ground balancing on the AT should help. Hope this helps.:)

Sometimes, I GB right over the top of this stuff...I figure it is the hottest ground around, so it should keep the detector quiet no matter where I hunt in the area...

HH,
