I did a little short hunt this morning along some sidewalk and curb edges and a small open area. Nothing was very deep. Going slow and easily sure is paying off on areas that I've already detected. I'm finding stuff I can't believe that I missed with other detectors that had target ID screens. I set the discrimination to where it just discriminates out a Gatorade Sports Drink Foil Cap, a slight hum on the threshold, slightly negative on the ground balance on my modded Cibola, and I was able to run full sensitivity without much chatter. I managed to find a bunch clad coins, some Wheat Pennies (1950, 1944, 1947, 1944), a 1944 Mercury Dime, and some kind of Eagle Button.

When I got through detecting, I spent some time doing some scouting for another good place to detect. I found a good one.

Jim it has a pretty good size glob of rust/dirt on the backside, but I can still tell that there's a stem for attaching to clothing.

I have it soaking in olive oil to see if I can get it free.

Look for grassy areas between curbs and sidewalks where cars have parked and still park on the street in the older areas of town. People lose things when getting into and out of cars. Also when they reach into their pocket to pull out the keys for the car, they sometimes accidentally pull out and drop a coin as well. Look for areas that are old and look for walk routes. People like cows tend to take the shortest and easiest route. They cut corners. I like sites where there has not been much human traffic but the location is really old. Those sites aren't that trashy, but the coins you find there are usually silver. On the other hand, a site that's old and still has high usage is a bugger to detect for old silver coins because of all the modern trash and clad coins mixed in, so I try to avoid them unless there's no other good place for me to detect. Think outside box and look for areas that others have missed.

The button is not worth very much, it turns out to be a Military WWII Great Seal Eagle COAT BUTTON.

Now that belt plate turned out be worth hundreds of dollars. Sames goes for that big gold ring that I just recently found

I often get maybe a little too far out of the box but your
foot traffic observation and applying it to the past when walking
was the norm is always in the forefront of my mind
the parking strips have always been at the top of my watch list
since finding a gold band in my own front yard next to the curb
and some days at the parks I never get past the edges, as that's
where I always start.
Maybe I just need a Genie.....

Yeah that's where I set it to ground balance and keep it there when I flip it over to the discriminate mode. I'm finding that with a good set of headphones keeping the threshold at a slight hum works best for me. I use a extra fine point magic marker to put a tick mark so I'm sure it remains there. Same thing with the discrimination. I want my settings to stay the exactly the same and let my ears do the discriminating. Moving things around changes the audio tone.
