Tesoro Compadre 8

Pontiac

New member
My 10 year old son got a Compadre for Xmas. I did a lot of research and watched many videos, so I feel comfortable in how the detector should work. So here is our problem.

Every time the unit is turned on (including the first time), it randomly, erratically keeps beeping. Kind of like Morse code. Turning the control knob in any direction does not stop or alter the chattering. Taking the detector to our park across the street has no change on the unit either. I double checked all the terminal connections and they are all tight. Nothing wiggles, nothing’s loose.

I tried calling Tesoro but I just get the answering machine telling me that they are open Monday – Friday 8-4pm. I am assuming they must be closed until after the New Year.

I am hoping it’s just a minor issue and I am hoping someone can assist us in getting the detector working.

Thanks

Is the Compadre brand new? You might want to check battery polarity, the 9 volt can be put in backwards.

#1.. If brand new from a reputable Dealer, it could be a factory flaw (defective) and:
a.. The Dealer might swap it out for you or
b.. You can send it to Tesoro for repair.

... OR ...

#2.. You bought it from a not quite so reputable Dealer and it might be defective but a traded back that is pawned off on the next buyer.:
a.. Contact the Dealer anyway and see how they want to handle it.
b.. Do 'a' and then use a different Dealer in the future ... after you send it to Tesoro for repair.

... OR ...

#3.. You bought it used and someone has likely been inside and tinkered with the trimmers, leaving you with a messed-up Compadre. I can't tell you how many times I have encountered that through the years, and that's why I will never take a Compadre on trade again.
a.. Contact the seller of the used unit to see what they might do for you.
b.. Contact Tesoro and send it off to AZ to get repaired.

Just the more likely things, from my experience, if there's no EMI, and you did try it in the house and across the street at the park. So w/o EMI it could be one of the above three reasons. It could be a defective detector and/or errant calibration (tuning) or it could be a bad search coil. Either way, Tesoro can repair it.

Thank you for the replies.

We bought it new off of Amazon.

We will contact Tesoro next year to see how they want us to handle it.

Seems like our options are return it through Amazon or have Tesoro repair it.

As long as we get a working unit, I don't care either way.

that stinks. i never used a compadre. but, if it is new, the battery is in correctly and you tried another make of battery. take off the coil cover and check if it has a crack in the resin. i,m sure tesoro will make it right for you. maybe return it to amazon and get one through kellyco. they have free shipping and no sales tax. i know, its just waiting for it.

That random chatter sure sounds like E M I ...do you happen to live near high tension lines or heavy industry or have underground electric lines?? If so try driving somewhere where there is no electrical services and see if it still acts up..if it still acts up then you know its not an electrical interference issue...good luck..

If not emi, a strong possibility that the internal sensitivity trimmer is set a bit too high.

I have a compadre which I have McGivered with the sensitivity adjustment mounted on the face plate. If I turn it up too high it chatters like that. I would say it is out of adjustment.

As mentioned, it does sound like its EMI. My compadre will do that if near the end of the house where the power service enters. Another thing that will have an effect are dimmer light switches and street lamps. Hope this helps.

I agree sounds like EMI. Have you tried it in a open park area? I have had the same problem. When I got my first Compadre it had a similar problem and I ended up having to turn down the internal sensitivity pot. I bought mine used and know about such things so it wasnt a problem. I hope its just EMI and it will work out doors. Good luck.

Dumb question does it go for a while or just a few seconds when you turn it on. I don't have mine in front of me but this is from the manual just seeing if this is what's going on?

Turn the control knob clockwise just far enough to turn on your detector. When you turn your detector on, you will hear a beep that lasts for a couple seconds. That is the battery test—a 5 to 7 second loud beep lets you know that your batteries are good. A weak and very short beep lets you know that it is time to change your batteries. When the battery test is done, leave the knob in the lowest position. This is the All-Metal setting. Sweep your coil about 3 inches above the targets. You should get a positive target response from all of the targets. Try sweeping your coil at different heights above the targets to see what kind of different responses you get. You may also try setting some of the targets on edge to hear the different responses you will get as well.

The only other thing it might be if it continues to beep something in the control box may be pushing on a wire or something pinching I had tha happen on another model they had me open it up and when I slide it out from the box and put it back it was perfect so something might have Jared in shipping good luck
