That's how many silver coins that I've found in 6 short hunts at a site that's about the size of a double tennis court. I also found a couple of silver rings, around 80 wheat pennies and no telling how much in clad coins. I'm almost certain that this site has never been detected before I swept a coil over it. Today was rough going and it seems like the finds are about gone. I only managed to find one measly 1943 War Nickel, a couple of Wheat Pennies (1920, 1951) and a few clad coins. This site has been hit super hard, but I'm willing to bet that there are still a few nice silver coins left. The only way to get it all is to dig ALL audio signals, even the real iffy ones. I may hit it again after we get another big soaking rain. I need to find another virgin site.

Thanks. You have to be at a good location to find lots of silver coins. I always have my eyes open for a good location. The more experience I get, the better I get at finding good locations. The obvious great looking locations are not good places to detect, because they've been hit hard over the years. Look for not so good looking places that others have missed. Virgin ground!

Where all those 22 finds made with the Deleon? Why did you choose the Deleon for that task?

I remember those early days of the latter '60s and most of the '70s when it was no problem to pop a few dozen real silvers a day. Hunt long enough and 2 to 4 dozen silvery dimes, quarters, halves and the occasional big ol' dollar made for a good day. Sure is tough to have a memory at times because it makes the last 35 years seem a lot more boring. Coin were aplenty back then, but today, as you stated, we need to try and find an unworked site that had ample use in the past.

I'm headed out for a two-day ghost town hunt in about an hour or so, but this particular town has been quite stingy when it comes to giving up silver.

When I said we figure things differently, I was referring to the low-percentage silver content coins, those "War Nickels" which I [size=small](and almost all my hunting buddies)[/size] have never considered to count as a "silver" coin. We only accept it in that category if it's 90% silver or more, like silver 3¢ pieces, half-dimes, dimes, quarters, halves and dollars. I'm sure you've pulled a good number or "real" silver coins out of there anyway. Keep at it and best of success.

Thanks. Monte finding a War Nickel is about the same to me as finding a Rosie. I got a thing for War Nickels and Buffalo Nickels. I may have over a hundred silver coins for the year without counting the War Nickels. I'm down to hunting on an average around 3.5 times a week and about four hours for each hunt. If I hunting everyday I'd have twice as much. It depends on how you do the math. Also if I just 'cherry picked' for silver coins, I could run up the silver count, BUT I really like to dig most every target to see what's there if I'm in a good area. I found some super neat relics and a bunch of gold rings doing that. It's all about having a good time.

Thanks. I've been detecting nearly 4 years. I'm a fast learner. Anything that I do, I'm all out. Many years ago before jumping into the ring my opponent came over and told me that he had 3 years experience and since this was my first time in the ring that I didn't stand a chance. It was close, I had a broken nose and was bleeding like stuck hog, but I got the win.

Im sure theres a lot of good yards I could hunt . I just have a hard time knocking on doors. I dont want to bother people. so I roam the woods and hills searching for areas of human activity. I have a pretty good eye for finding old trails and such.

I know what mean about digging just about everything. There has to be some more goodies waiting for me to dig them up. A gold ring maybe.

I'd take a silver Roosevelt or older era 90%'er any day over a "War Nickel," but I do enjoy finding Buffalo Nickels. We used to find quite a few Buffalos from '65 through about '75 to the latter '70s, then their frequency dropped off in popular use places because most had been found. I know that since the summer of '83 I have recovered more Shield Nickels and far more 'V' Nickels than I have Buffalo's, but that's probably due to site selection.

With the info you provided readers, the math is pretty simple as it is an 'average' of 14 hours per week that you're out detecting, naturally that's weather permitting. But I am certain that many/most folks who own a metal detector don't do much more than 14 hours to double that [size=small](28 hours)[/size] of detecting in an entire year.

If more people would put in the time afield, they would not only find more, they would be better off because they could learn more about how their detector works, and with frequent use they would engrain that in their memory and have more confidence and be less intimidated about what is in their hand and the settings they are using. Their skills would also improve in how to evaluate a site, how to better cover a site, and they just might come to realize that site selection is very important for overall success in this sport.

Agree 100% on this. Spots that I have cherry picked I have gone back over with a dig all attitude. It is amazing the additional finds that I have made. For me cherry picking is mostly due to limited time. If a cherry picked sight is productive, I come back when I don't have time limitations and really begin to clean it out. Target VDI's are not an issue for me because none of my detectors have it.

I hope you do find gold, tabman. I know the Deleon is a great silver finder. I just never got gold, or even a ring with mine. When that far right segment was pegged with a 95, I got chills.
