tesoro golden chatter.

Just got a golden umax that I bought from a forum member-More about that later but is it supposed to chatter in disc mode.
I have the sensitivity backed all the way down to 5? The disc knob is all the way down to no disc at all and the notch switch is in the middle and the disc switch is in the disc position.?
still chatters

Should be quiet unless there's a good deal of emi. Not sure where you're testing it. Is it noisy in the field away from power lines, etc?

I'll try it outside tomorrow. I tried this in the basement on top of a box 44" from the floor and 6' or more from any wall. I just bought an eldorado and set it on the box also and there is no chatter at all.
here is a pic of the bottom of the coil.
I thought it was a coil cover but it does not come off. There is a crack in the upper portion.
The ad said it was in awesome shape but to me it is not.
Maybe to him it is but I can see why he only posted a pic of the control box. almost all of the stuff I sell is mint or I just say used and shows some wear.
AS for me this is not the first time I have been stung and I will not buy in the forum any more except from forum dealers. I'm glad to be a member here and it is a great place for info. but Sometimes you may pay a little more from a dealer but the eldorado I just bought from Richard of backwoods detectors was a much better buy and cheap to for an eldorado and it was in better shape than he described and better than this golden. I guess I can send it in to tesoro.
Here are some pics and if you click on the pic of the coil bottom it will get bigger and you can see the crack.

Could be the ground balance. If it's the coil, test it by tapping it lightly and see if you get any falsing. Try a different coil with it if you can.

Right now I am trying to get my money back-I immediately sent him an email as soon as I tried it out.
I thought it would be like new when it was described as being in awesome shape.
He said he had the box and manual and wanted a money order so I sent it to him.
I emailed him when I sent the money order and then he tells me he made a mistake and didn't have the box.
Now I get the detector and it is like this.believe me the detector looks worse when it is right in front of you. Could I put the coil from the eldorado on it and try it.
I don't want to damage it. I just can't use a coil from a tejon or vaquero or even a cibola but I think I can use the eldorado.
I don't have any other tesoro coils?

It's a crack in the coil cover, not the coil itself. The coil cover needs to be removed and cleaned. There's all kinds of dirt between the cover and the coil.

Removing a stuck coil cover can be tricky, but doable. Cracks and scratches on a coil cover is not unusual.

Good luck!

That looks very much like the coil cover. I know in some cases they may get loose and I'm hoping the guy didn't glue it on some how. These are made to be removed so you can clean the coil and inside of the coil cover. If you get dirt, sand, etc. between the cover and coil it can seem to be very sensitive and chatter as yours is. Hope it ail works out ans the guy honors your request to return it.

I thought it was a cover at first but it does not budge-could be crud..you guys think I am making a big deal out of nothing?
how many of you would give $350 for this right now.
email me and I will send it to you..
I took it on AIRFORCEMIKES description. ever see his stuff. it always looks mint-look at the outlaw he is selling it is just like new, He just sold an SE Pro with extra coil and it looked like new.so I thought this would be in that category.
For myself-I don't blame him at all i know he wouldn't pull anything on anybody but was trying to do some one a favor. As for me I can buy anything but I'm a buyer and tryer and it would be foolish for me to buy new all the time so I look for a used in mint shape. If I don't get my money back I will just leave feedback and he is well known in the forum as far as I know. I just feel for the ones who have to save up to buy one of these.used and then gets one like this.anyway I will try to get the coil cover off if you say it is a cover after all. Even the side won't pull back.
What do you guys think a new rod and coil would cost and if I do that should I get the smaller coil-what coil works the best on this.

That's definetly a coil cover. Maybe try soaking it in warm water for a while?

Those type Coil Covers are very tight and you must get it off.

If your not happy with the unit and you honestly feel it's not worth the $350 you paid, let him know, I'm sure he'll work with you.

I already told him I thought it was not worth it-no way and asked for my money back but I don't think he will.
I will just post feedback-in the feedback forum.

That is a coil cover and it needs to come off. You may want to try wooden dowel or something that will set on the edge and start tapping the dowel with a small hammer, just keep moving all around the edge and watch for some movement. That should get it started moving, hope it is not glued.

OK I will try it
thanks

I got the cover off and cleaned the junk out but it cracked so I have to get another one later on if I sell it.
the chattering is gone and I put a fresh battery ln it. I set it up like 53silver or thought I did but I still get a lot of low grunts combined with the high beeps
I will have to play with it for awhile.
Thanks to AIRFORCEMIKE for trying to get my money back but it won't work-Forget it and move on.This guy wanted the funds to put towards a CTX and he is not going to give it back.
I posted who it was in the feedback forum anyway. Thanks to everyone for the help they offered.

Sounds like you're on the right track. The simultaneous tones you're getting might be OK. I sometimes get them when I'm not in the notch mode. To clean up the tone, go into the notch mode, see if it helps. If going into notch cleans up the tone you may be OK.

One day last year my Tejon was chattering non stop, pretty much nothing I could do to fix it. Then I pulled off my coil cover and found it full of crud. I swooshed the coil and cover in a creek, let them dry, then reattached. No problem since.

Ok David I apologize for my delay with getting back but as i mentioned had to work today..long day. I really apoligize for his doing and I hope the rest of the forum here understands it had nothing to do with me at all but I am to blame for my actions in beliving, trusting a vet (which I am as well) and posting it in a forum for him. Terry I know from another forum and have dealt with him just in day to day talks about detectors..etc..he is what i consider a friend, and well known there with hundreds of posts..etc. He really wanted to purchase and trade some stuff to me but I did not want to get rid of my 705 but I myself have an interest in a golden but till I sell my Outlaw I just have no need to get one. Golden fits my style more than the Outlaw. IF you seen my posts of my detectors you can see im about as honest as it gets when selling. I really went beyond my duty with this guy..knowing this is the most popular of all the forums i deal with..I gave up my one chance to sell my Outlaw for him so I could help him sell his Golden (my 90 days was up from selling my SE PRO here so i could sell another unit) My poor outlaw sits in other forums still not sold cause I helped out a stranger. Both parties knew it was not my machine and they both had emails to talk to each other and all I did was just post and that was totally wrong on my part. Im still trying to get a hold of him..he does respond to me and every email i send to David but looks like he is not telling the truth..he tells me he sent david a email david tells me no...so not real sure. I will still continue to get with terry and work with Dave to fix this issue or he will no longer be in that forum as well...cause im livid.

sorry Dave will keep in touch..going to try to get a hold of him again now!!

As I said before-it is over with ,forget it-$350 is not going to break me.I could always buy another rod and coil and I would have a new golden.
I just feel bad for those, and there are more than just a few-that have to save $350 and then get stung in a deal like this.
it is not just a matter of cleaning either. There is a difference between him and guys like Mike Hillis-When Mike says it is clean and like new-you can bet your bottom dollar it is.
anyway there is to much time wasted on this-I'm going to send it in to tesoro after I call them. I just got an email from the seller with the usual bull crap saying he didn't clean it thinking I wanted it right away when you know I mailed him a money order and he had plenty of time but it is more than cleaning. He knew the condition it was in and he also said he would split the repair.Yeah, right like I am going to believe that.- I don't believe he would come up with the money. With this detector everything in the ground has two tones (low grunt and a high)or just a low tone and a lot of times when I get a signal in disc mode-I flip to all metal and there is nothing there.I'm going to try my eldorado coil and see if there is a difference but I think not.
I'll just call tesoro on monday.
