Curt --

Try watering it all down thoroughly and packing it down. Have you ever had a good coin hit while hunting, and then dug into the hole and lost the signal (even though you could then find the coin in the hole with your pro-pointer?) That may be similar to what's going on. Six inches is getting into the moderately-deep range, and these are newly-buried coins. Also, some folks will say that coins interacting with the soil will "connect" with the soil matrix -- and this "connection" (chemically/electrically -- I don't fully understand this "connection") is apparently a big part of what allows our machines to properly detect and ID coins. Obviously, you don't have this "connection" in your garden. Matter of fact, NASA Tom Dankowski -- well known detectorist and NASA engineer, actually suggests pouring a "brine solution" over your newly-buried coins in your test garden -- to facilitate this "connection" between coin and soil. Obviously, such connection won't occur immediately in a brand-new garden, and it won't occur at all, I wouldn't think, with the coins in plastic bags, so this also could be part of the problem.

Hope this helps some,

Steve
