test on a small fragment

Using settings of ground 60 mode 2+ sens at 50, I picked up the target which was a ragged half off a silver coin, with a hole in it just the same has discrim at 10 so a setting of 40 would find any coin in the UK ,the T2

Appreciate the post John.

All practical advice is noted.

Can you tell me the actual 'in air' VDI of that particular ragged hammered?

I like to keep data of typical examples, for future reference.

p.s. I noticed the small hole punched into the coin.
I too have a couple of old hammered coins with the same 'hole'.
For our State side mates, we can add that it appears to be a practice indulged in for personal reasons, even centuries ago
Some form of 'keep-sake', I guess, attributed to that particular coin for reasons known only to the person who last owned it.
Even today people do the same.
I recall how I had a bracelet made for a girl friend, out of silver coins collected on holiday in Jersey. It was to 'tell her' how much I missed her whilst I was away without her...Yes, we were 'young and foolish', once upon a time..

If only artifacts could 'talk', what intimate memories they could tell?.......MattR.UK.

Thanks........Matt

Hi John Moore,

You forgot to state the depth the coin was buried at?

Redo the test and bury the coin another 6 to 8 inches and report your findings please.

Happy Hunting

You can't expect to put a target back in the ground and get the same reading. Once you have disturbed the ground matrix the reading won't be the same and if you put the target deeper that will only make it worse.

Hi lcpm,

I'm glad I am not the only one that is questioning the theories and tests of John Moore and Matt R.

Come on Coenwolf, put us out of our misery.
Where are the photographs?

I am guessing he found them at good depths if he was using low discrimination?:yo:

IN my post I never mentioned the coin was buried, so your post has no meaning your theories are out of order, perhaps if you spent more time reading what I SAID ,INSTEAD OF TRYING TO PICK HOLES IN MY POST .

please reread my post and I said, I picked it up,I NEVER SAID I DUG it up ,perhaps in your haste you missed that

When you wrote you picked up a target I thought you meant you got a hit on a target in the ground sorry hope I didn't get everyone angry!

As for small targets I pick up 22 bullets all the time that sound like 69 caliber mini balls. I've even picked up BB's with no trouble. Sometimes I get strong signals that are so small that they keep falling through my fingers. I have to keep picking up hand fulls of dirt before I finally find the item. I've never seen a detector that produce such a loud signal on such small items. Thats why you can cover a lot of ground, because it will sound off when you get near something. I did notice the other day that I could pass a coin over the coil and not really pick it up as well as if I passed it under the coil. My Explorer would pick it the same if I passed it over or under the coil. That might come in handy if you are around some bleachers.
