The whole of the area is below sea level apart from a small raised area, Athelney. The area is also a place for peat farming and prehistoric finds have been found and preserved with the wet and boggy conditions.

The history
We know that Athelney once stood as a lone hill among miles of marshes. The site was fortified by King Alfred, who used it as a base to launch attacks on Danes (Vikings) in the surrounding area. Through great skill
