Testing Bottle caps with my AT-PRO

54shooter

New member
I'm trying to test my 3 month old AT-PRO that I just got. I put a bottle cap on a piece of clean ground to try and get the low high low tone and all I get is a garbled mess. I have swept the area with my Ace 350 and the AT-PRO and it's clean. I have also tried air testing the bottle cap with the same results. I have the machine in Pro,Zero with 35 disc and Iron Audio on and can't get that clean crisp tone that I've seen on the Garrett tutorial vid. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I have a area at a old school that is totally infested with bottle caps and I'm not sure if there is a problem or not.I want to be sure I have it right before I hunt it.I haven't dug any coins deeper than 2" so far, but I'm not sure if I've put the coil over a deep coin yet or not. I'm just worried why I can't get the crisp tones like on the vid. Any Idea's?

Turn the Iron Audio off and try that. Bottle caps are not aways a high low high, they can also sound off with a high tone and a scratch. Different brands (beverages) caps can sound different.

Thanks alot diggin-it. I had a good day with it. Just found clad, some junk jewlery and a whatsit. The good thing about it was I was finding some deeper targets. Thanks again!!! HH

Soon you will learn how a bottlecap does not pinpoint well. That is the first clue. Then check it with iron audio and you can't miss it--maybe one in a hundred. The garbled mess you talk about is the detector seeing the different alloys in the bottlecap.

Dang, that's useful info; I love this forum. Thanks.
I can pass the high tones with a low churp on each side, but most of the many bc's I still dig just read 75-85. Still got a lot to learn.

That's great info. It gives me peace of mind as I use the machine. I have only dug 1 bottle cap that wasn't on purpose. I'm still digging most of them until I have total trust that I'm not passing up a good target. I think the AT-PRO is going to be a great machine for me!!!!! After 4 very good months with my Ace 350 this machine is the perfect addition to my arsenal. Thanks for all the great info, This Forum Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One other thing is to make a wider sweep (if you can) when testing in iron audio. If you just do a tiny wiggle of the bottle cap it might sound good in iron audio.

Sorry for the mistype, I meant "tiny wiggle over the bottle cap."

Yes, early on many caps around 80-82 would fool me until I started remembering to check them with iron audio.

That and the weird pinpointing. But it's always good to check every target you plan to dig with the iron audio first so you can learn to see what it is telling you. There are going to be some "iffy" targets you should dig all of them. I went to a sand tot lot and dug even the tiniest sounds with no ID #. It's easy and fast digging for most targets.
