This has been a rough week... this afternoon we buried my brother.
Nicky was in the Army in '58 (Berlin wall crisis) so they did have a color guard. Believe it or not, it's unusual to have anyone available to play taps. They actually use a recording nowadays (pretty sad huh?). A good friend of mine at church was at the wake and asked about taps (we never even thought about it) and he volunteered to come out to the cemetery to play (he's a professional trumpet player). Needless to say, it was very emotional.
Having to see our 90 year old mom crying and sobbing was enough to rip our hearts out. Nicky was basically her caregiver since my father died 10 years ago. She's hanging in there for now though. At least my sister (up from Florida) is with her for another week. Sometime between now and then, we're going to have to find someone to stay with her, at least during the day. (she wouldn't go to a nursing home). Don't know what we're going to do...
Again, thanks.
Joe
