The 8 inch Tornado cable problem

Rick(ND)

Well-known member
I read many people had problems with the outer cable flaking off, now my brand new one that I havent even used it yet and found many places where there is quite a few places where has chunks off it. The coil I bought maybe about 10 years ago and been hanging in my shop, I was surprised to see this and had a few people that wanted to buy it and glad I never sold it. This is the first coil do this plus on one of the used Sovereign I got also had a 8 inch Tornado coil that had shrink wrap on it and was going to replace it. Got the cable in and wasnt cheap to do it and doing so the cable I was told I needed has 4 wire in it with 1 white and 3 black which is not good, so I had to check which wire would go to which wire by checking with a Ohm meter and sealed the wire with epoxy at coil end. I believe the black had one two and three on them and when I went to put the cable end that connect to the control box the number rubbed off the wires. Now I have 2 of them both the 8 inch tornado coils to replace the cable on and will need to know the Ohm for the the transmit and receive coils then I can check them with the other coil and see what color the ire is on the new one.
That is one of the project I have to work on plus got the battery set up for the alkaline pack , the 2 holders with the 9 volt connectors and have on order for the connector to plug this into the control box. This is I would like to help Ted with if everything works as I planed it. The 10 cell rechargeable pack have to change the plug to plug it into the Control. Hope to know this weekend as I will try it in the Sovereign XS I have here.

Rick,
This issue with the cracking of the sheathing came up on either this forum or another several years ago.
At the time I still had a Sovereign GT and was concerned.
From my understanding the wire sheathing material was changed at some point and just like the cable you have, started cracking prematurely.
I think someone stated if the sheathing was very shiny, it was the new material and the older material had a duller finish to it and actually over time developed a faint white residue it.
My coils had this type of finish and I never had any issues with it.
The Musketeer Advantage that I still have also has the same finish and again, has no issues with any cracking.
I have had this detect since 2007 or 2008 I believe.

Thats solves a mystery for me......the sheathing on my 10" tornado is dull and has developed a white substance on it that is easily wiped off.The cable is still very supple so im not concerned about cracking.......like you said, must be the older better cable.🤔🤔

I believe it is too…. The cable on my Musketeer Advantage has that white film on it, and it too is still very supple….no cracks so far.

I have a sniper coil on my white's mxt the coil jacket completely flaked off.
I bought this plastic dip for handle's that's supposed to stay soft.
Gonna try painting it on with a brush.
Haven't tried it yet.
Won't be pretty but if it's water proof I'll be happy. My favorite little 5" round coil.
Gotta find a safe place to hang it where if it drips won't ruin the floor.
Wife hates my kitchen projects.
Gotta paint the new mirror she broke on her car next.
I can just hear the screaming now.
Just to cold in the garage. 😏

After just reading more.
It said do not use back and forth brushing.
Now I'm thinking of tapping up the connector and coil end and just dipping the wire into the can.
And trimming off the parts I don't want coated.
