The E-Trac Heavy???

The weight is the same as a stock Excal but it APPEARS to be much lighter. There's more to long term comfort and "swingability" of a detector than just the weight . . . . . ergonomics and balance play a bigger role and for those that have actually picked up an E-Trac, they will agree that it FEELS much lighter than an Explorer.
 
but the pro coil is much easier on the arm than the older stock coils... thats where people are seeing the better balance I am sure.. I can feel it in the SE with the new coil as well..
 
especially if you are on grass and can glide the coil along the turf. It is effortless in that case. The Excalibur was going to be my next machine but then... there come's the E-Trac... I am going to have to sell something, I don't think I can get away with buying another detector without selling one... alas...

The E-Trac's grip angle was made 15 degrees steeper than the Explorer's which takes the weight off the wrist & forearm which is what killed a lot of us. Again, the weight is not much different than the Explorer but the grip angle and the Pro coil (which in case anyone is interested was originally developed for the E-Trac but the release got delayed so long Minelab opted to put it out as the SE Pro and then sell the coil by itself, so the coil known as the SE Pro 11" coil was actually intended to be the stock E-Trac coil introduced with the new detector) combine to make the detector FEEL significantly lighter and easier to hunt with for hours on end. My wife never liked the weight & feel of the Explorers but does like the E-Trac's feel.

Ergonomics (grip) and balance (coil) do make a noticeable difference

I purchased the SE Pro coil for my SE about 2 months ago and have been using it for the past 20+ hunts. Previously, I was using an Exp. II 1050 coil, which I loved, and found lots of silver/wheats/Injuns in the turf with it.

The only thing right now that's a little disturbing to me about the SE Pro Coil(I'm trying to understand the reason for this right now), is an increase in shoulder/chest muscle pain/stiffness/spasming. I talked to 2 other users on my other forums about it, and both have been suffering too with the new coil, so I'm not the only one. One of my friends had to put his older 1050 coil back on, and his pain has subsided. I've never had a problem before using an older Exp. II 1050 coil. I think I may know why......I'm thinking the new coil's geometry is to blame. I have noticed an increase in the drag force while sweeping/scrubbing the ground. Its more open design causes the blades of turf to catch, which increases the force/energy needed to swing. Or, it could possibly be the larger surface area it has (11") which causes this. I like to scrub the turf when I swing. I don't like swinging a coil off the ground. That's just my theory though. With this coil, after a good 4 hour hunt where I'm digging 30-40+ 6-9" plugs, my muscles get overworked. I remember with the 1050 coil, I could dig over 50+ plugs for an 8 hour period, and I was less tired than with the shorter hunt with the SE Pro coil. The coil is lighter (by a little over 2 ounces) than the older stock coil, so I know the weight has nothing to do with it. The older 1050, with it's rounded/curved edges glided through the turf effortlessly.

Just my 2 Cents worth. For performance, the coil is awesome though!! I can't take it off, even though I had to cut my time short on each hunt with it. It has allowed me to strike silver coinage on 20 consecutive hunts so far. It's staying on my SE for now.

Where the inside v's are have a tendency to catch grass, but it's the best coil yet for sure. Wish they made a light weight solid cover for it, but that would add weight they were trying to eliminate.
 
Hey Guys, You can look up DfxGregg, he made a solid cover out of a drum skin that worked out very well. hh EddieB
 
Did you just trace a pattern on the skin and cut?? Is your coil cover just snapping on like before or did you caulk it?
 
but you have to trim of all the inside lips of the cover so the plastic will fit between the coil and cover. ( DON"T TRIM THE OUTSIDE LIPS OFF OF THE COVER BECAUSE THEY ARE NEEDED TO HOLD THE COVER ON ) I had a little trouble of the cover popping loose occasionly where I hunt in very rough terrain but this could be fixed by using some silicone or caulk to help hold it in position.
 
Well I'm sure the feel is better than the Explorer, but at the end of the day, almost 5 pounds is almost 5 pounds. Hunt with an Xterra in one hand and an E-trac in the other and see which arm gets tired first. When Minelab makes an Explorer/E-trac in an Xterra like package, I'll buy one. There's really no reason for all the weight.
 
Good point Andy. I'm glad to see that Minelab has built a detector with the coil close to your feet. I try and do that as often as possible. Having a coil away from your body, is only going to work against you.
The weight for me will still be a bit of an issue do to a neck injury I suffered a few years back. If I swing my Explorer much more than a couple of hours, I start aggravating things. Hopefully the new set up will make it easier. I'll find out on Saturday when I get down to a detecting shop.
The only other concern that I have, is being able to separate our $1 and $2 coins from screw caps. The $2 coin has exactly the same footprint as your zinc pennies, with the $1 coins also pretty close. I don't think that it will be possible to separate them with the visual discrimination, but I'm interested if the pinpoint might be a help. If the tones are the same as the Explorers, then you can have some limited success. Given that the E-trac seems to be more stable on targets, it may help the tones to do a better job. I'll put it to the test on Saturday.

After my first hunt wit the E Trac I think most will discover that the most important weight factor is the coil and lower shaft, which is still heavy. When I swing I have to stop the momentum of the coil with my shoulder joint and then start it back the other way and repeat the process. that momentum makes the weight of the coil more of a problem. Until they fix that I will have to keep using the swingy thingy to hunt for 8 hour days. As I see it there is no change in weight factors that make a difference.
