The F5 scores another gold ring.

Mike Hillis

Well-known member
I'm scoring some type of gold most every trip out with my F5. This one is worth posting a picture of. Found a nice large mens 10kt gold ring with 22 diamonds (one missing, or I could say 23 diamonds). Actually large enough to fit my fingers
VDI number was a 34.

Wow, got to love that. That big chuck of gold probably would almost pay for your detector. Seems like you are only going to make money with this one. Way to go.

Nice ring Mike, congrats!

I am a F5 user from Finland and I love the machine for jewelry and coins. I have scored 507.55 euros ($694+) in just 4.5 months along with many silver rings and chains and two small gold rings and one thick gold wrist chain worth 500 euros. Do you use the stock coil for your jewelry hunting? I have both the stock coil and 11" DD coil but prefer the stock coil for jewelry hunting.

HH,

Very nice, Mike! Always happy to see someone score well.

Mike,
Wow!! that is a very nice ring, I am going to have to start paying attention to those signals right above a nickel, I figure they are pull tabs. Thanks for the picture. HH Randy

Mike, was this a beach find? or........??

Hi Patti,

Glad to meet another F5 fan.

Normally, I too, run the stock coil when I'm jewelry hunting. I didn't have much time to detect so I was wanting to cover as much ground as possible and put the 11" DD on. Had to get used to telling deep trash targets from good stuff again. The 11" DD goes quite a bit deeper than the stock coil Have to really rely on that pinpoint audio to keep from digging deep trash.

Roland,
No beaches around me. All my jewelry comes from parks, playgrounds, school yards, athletic fields and tot lots. This particular ring was a school playground find.

Thanks for the info, Mike......good to know, it gives me hope! No beaches around here, either. I don't think even our dirt is old. One of these days I'll find a place with something older than me.

Hi Bob,
My wife is picking up my Bug from the post office today ;) Should get to try it out during the Thanksgiving weekend. Be hard to beat the F5 though. The F5 is a gold hunter's dream machine. I'm trying to remember what it was about the Bug that caused me to get one in the first place as the F5 is probably the PREMIERE metal detector for inland jewelry hunting. But I'd like to see how the Bug handles hot ground and I have need of the reported EMI stability. We'll see is it really adds anything for me or not.

Mike after reading your post along and along I can see the f5 is a good detector and you have good knowledge of it ....nice ring hh......Daniel Davis

Hi Mike

The F5 is a real good unit, but I do believe the Gold Bug is going to surprise you on gold/gold jewelry. In a range that the F5 can't go.

Have a nice Thanksgiving.

Mr.Bill

You are probably right, Bill.
I was air testing last night and found it pretty impressive on the lower conductive stuff. In fact I went and compared both the F5 and the Goldbug with same coils and found the Gold bug and F5 close on the high conductors but then the Goldbug pulled away on the lower conductors at the high gain settings. But the F5 was no slouch in the test either.

But 1) EMI never lets me run the F5 at those settings
and 2) Neither does my ground if I want to actually find stuff.

The question is, "Will the ground mineralization and EMI actually allow the GoldBug to be ran at the higher gain settings where it would outperform the F5?".

Will find out this weekend.

Hi Mike

I think the Gold Bug will handle the ground a bit better. After all it's a gold detector first, and gold bearing ground is nasty ground. You should discover the re-set speed is faster on the bug also. It's at least as fast as the Tek T2.

It's nice to learn the F5 holds it's own. Dollar for dollar, the F5 is a great deal. One of the best coming out of Fisher in a long time.

Mr.Bill

CONGRATS Mike on a great find!! Did the VDI 34 Lock-On Tight, or was it a BOUNCY VDI? THANKS, Les Robinson
