The Good Beach Fairies are starting to distribute coins...

I have found 416 coins on deserted beaches. We have had 3 days that people could come to the beaches so far this year. It has been wet, cold and not to much good for fun and sun on the beaches. Me and the seagulls are usually the only ones on the beaches.
Today the beach had probably 200 people playing on the beach and here is what I found. 44 degrees for low tonight and 65 for a high tomorrow. So you can see the weather is not good sun and fun beach weather......Z

Nice Finds Z !!!!!

That Global warming crap will freeze you to death. Supposed to be around 90 degrees here today.

Thanks Berry
The winter has been so long here that even at 65 degrees the people are out on the beach sitting on blankets with sweaters on.
I just put those posts on trying to explain how good the Safari is at finding coins on deserted beaches. It is a super beach machine. Very easy to use but it sure does take time to get to know.

Z,

Looks like you are finding the stuff that other machines missed, nice work!!!

The Safari can be really confusing, I am finally starting to understand the difference between good tones and trash. Here in Gettysburg, we have everything from deep brown loamy soil to red-orange mineralized stuff that is like detecting in powdered rust. So far, I have been most successful using either the all metal program or a "Saved" program using the Ferrous tones from the factory "Relic" program with -10 through -7 and +40 discriminated out. I am not completely convinced that there is not a minor loss of depth with added discrimination so I generally start out using AM. When I find a diggable target I switch to the saved Relic mode to see if the target is still being found. If I find that I am not losing targets in the saved Relic mode I generally switch to that and stay there for the rest of the hunt. Because we occasionaly run into fragments of iron shells, iron canister balls or iron musket tools I will dig a strong -3 through -1 signal but generally I am looking for lead and brass (I freely admit it, I'm a confirmed LeadHead and nothing makes my day like that flutey high tone with a solid 33 reading).

I picked the Safari because I wanted a high-horsepower machine that did not have extensive diagnostic functions. I would prefer to listen to the tones and let my brain do the diagnostics. I wanted accurate discrimination, deep detection and consistent results without having to carry a mini-computer. The most successful Relic Hunter that I know uses an ancient White's Blue and Grey machine that is four years older than some of the guys that dig with us. His approach is "Get to know your machine and you will find stuff that everyone else misses", and he rarely comes back without a full pouch.

Keep the faith...

Hey Tom,

I know what you mean about that "flutey high tone with a solid 33". The day I get tired of digging minie balls is day I'll hang it up.

In my opinion, you've got some great weather for detecting! I would always much prefer a deserted beach when detecting than one full of people and kids running around. Of course one needs the latter to happen so as to ensure some decent finds.

Last Friday I took the Safari out for its first beach run in Seaside, Oregon. Very smooth in wet sand close to the water's edge, not like my Tesoro Silver uMax which has fits in wet sand.

I didn't come away with much as the finds were few and far between. 45 cents in clad and one of those machine rolled pennies with an image of an octopus on it (kinda cute). But the clad quarter I did find gave a faint signal and I found it at around 10 inches. I figured it must have been on edge to give such a faint signal.

Ray if you do a lot of beach hunting you will find the Safari a very good machine on the beaches. 65 degrees is good hunting weather but it doesn't encourage beach goers to come and drop their hard earned money so I can find it. :detecting:
Went detecting this afternoon. The beach had a lot of people there. Kind of moved around a little and not finding much. So went to a trashy area and hunted with 11" coil. Turned sensitivity down to 6, with high trash on and went very slow. I am still using all metal mode seem to like that the best. Ended up with 9 pennies. Got 3 wheats 41, 44, 45. I went home very tired from trying to get a good signal out of the trash after only an hour. It can be done but it took a lot out of me. I don't think I will do that again, maybe?? I just wanted to see if there was anything in the trash. It does show me that I must get a smaller coil for the trashy areas. And there is some good stuff in those trashy areas.....

Yeah, I'm not sure when I'll get to try the Safari again at the beach. But it's good to know it works extremely well there. In fact, I even tried the auto setting for sensitivity. Really cuts down on the chatter in all metal to almost nothing, but because the finds were few and far between, as I stated earlier, I don't really know how it affected depth.

On the bright side, today I found my deepest coin today...a clad dime down about 9". I'm sure if it was silver I wouldn't have missed it.

Ray I run auto almost all the time. It is still a testing phase for me. I know I am digging much deeper than I have ever dug before. I know the beaches because I have been hitting the same ones the last 3 years. I even detect the same places because I see where the people hang out and I know where I have dug older coins. I have also seen pictures of the beaches as far back as the 1950's. I know where soda/beer cans are buried and steal poles (2) are down there. One time I started to dig all the cans and I got 24 before I quit. So I don't do that any more. By the way never found any coins under the cans.
The targets are mostly 4" or more. That just amazes me. I have no idea how deep because old dead eye is not so great yet at pin pointing with the 11"DD coil. I have dug holes 10" to recover the coins and the coin is in the last scoop. The deeper I go the wider the hole gets. I cringe when the depth meter is light to the bottom.
I am really thinking of a smaller coil. A 6" coil always worked good for me on my other detectors. I am looking at the 4.5x7 coil any one have any information on the little guy?
