On a hot, July day in the summer of 1962, the gravel pit was a place full of action. It seems, once again, all the neighborhood boys had picked this day to try out their home made go carts they had put together from various pieces of lawnmower wheels, wood, rope, etc. If they were really into it, they might even have them painted. One after the other, they would line up this go cart at the top of the hill, and then one or two of them would push the driver on the go cart as fast as they could, to give the him a good start. It was then the exhilaration, and perhaps a bit of anxiety would set in, and hope you could make it all the way down the hill without finding yourself in a wreck.
These go carts, all home made, were steered by either a rope connected to the front board covering the axle ( which usually consisted of a piece of old rebar) and you would pull the rope in the direction you wanted to turn. And if you wanted to stop???? This was left up to your own resources. There were no brakes, but many a pair of tennis shoes were worn out, that
