Read Romans 3:23. "...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God..."

Why is this message so easy for us, as Christians, to believe today? At the same time, what could cause some people to question the truthfulness of this text?

Amazingly enough, some folk actually challenge the idea of human sinfulness, arguing that people are basically good. The problem, however, stems from a lack of understanding what true goodness is. People can compare themselves to someone else and feel good about themselves. Even the mobster Al Capone was a saint compared to Adolph Hitler. However, when we contrast ourselves to God, and to the holiness and righteousness of God, none of us would come away with anything other than an overwhelming sense of self-loathing and disgust.

The verse also talks about "the glory of God." The phrase has been variously interpreted. Perhaps the simplest interpretation is to give the phrase the meaning it has in 1 Corinthians 11:7, "He [man] is the image and glory of God" (RSV). In Greek, the word for "glory" may be considered as loosely equivalent to the word for "image." Sin has marred the image of God in man. Sinful man falls far short of reflecting the image or glory of God.

Read Romans 3:10 - 18. "As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. There is no fear of God before theireyes."

Has anything changed today? Which of those depictions best describes you, or what you would be like were it not for Christ in your life?

As bad as we are, our situation is not hopeless. The first step is for us to acknowledge our utter sinfulness and also our helplessness in and of ourselves to do anything about it. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to bring about such conviction. If the sinner does not resist Him, the Spirit will lead the sinner to tear away the mask of self-defense, pretense, and self-justification and to cast himself or herself upon Christ, pleading His mercy:

My hope and faith is only in Jesus' forgiveness by the saving of my soul and giving me a heart change in His precious shed blood washing me clean my confessed sins by the repentance of all my sins and then asking God in Jesus' holy name to help me to keep on, keepin' on by faith walking in the light of His righteous and narrow pathway leading to eternal life and not the broad way with a wide gate still enlarging itself, for catching all who are sinners, unbelievers and not forgiven into its fires by being snared with the luring lies of satan and then the antichrist after the faithful saints have been caught up unto our blessed Savior in the air and to be forever with our Lord! The only salvation and safety we have is in the loving forgiveness of our Lord and Savior, Jesus, by our asking for His forgiveness and humbling ourselves for serving Him only! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

Yes, Mike, Jesus took the keys to death and hell away from satan and only we can open the door to heaven through Him, by His forgiveness and our repentance of all sins! Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Heavenly Father but by Him any other way is a thief and a liar! Amen! Ma Betty

This was my old pastor's fav bible verse. I always think of him when I read or hear this. How ironic and true this verse turned out to be for him. He left our small church and went to a big church as he had a family to support and made some very bad decisions and ended up losing his wife and children. Sin and Satan's tricks are something we MUST not underestimate. I pray for my old pastor all the time...he was one of my best friends. I cannot imagine how such a man of strong faith could become so worldly and far away from GOD. That was a very difficult lesson for me to learn...Our "spiritual leaders" aren't always who we think they are.

Godly people and preachers and any ministries of the Lord serving Christ by obedience are tempted more and hardest hit by satan and need prayer more than most who just sit in the pews! The more we do for the saving of souls and leading others on the straight and narrow way of God, we are under attack and always in danger of demonic tricks and the wicked ,wiley, lying ways that the old devil uses! Sorry to hear about your previous pastor losing his faith and family, but God won't let him alone until he is too far gone and will try to get him back into the Sheepfold! For even when one sheep goes astray out of a 100 sheep, Jesus will go looking for and seeking that one sheep to be back in God's good graces! So someway and somehow, I believe your pastor will find his way back home to where he belongs with His Savior and Lord and, hopefully, his family, too! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty
