The language of the Deus

Andy Sabisch

Active member
As those that have been swinging the Deus for any length of time can attest, it speaks a language all its own. The Deus is similar to the Minelab's in that the language it speaks is so different from other detectors that often people that pick one up toss in the towel before they learn the language. For those where the light has come on, the capabilities are pretty amazing under some very challenging conditions.

I wanted to share an example of what the Deus can do and what it tells you from this weekend's hunt.

There are two reasons why sites that have been hunted for years still contain valuables to be found . . . . the targets are either extremely deep making it hard for most detectors to pick them up or they are not that deep yet masked by adjacent trash which makes them invisible to most detectors.

I was in South Carolina this weekend for my daughter's graduation and couldn't resist swinging over to a small site that had been hunted regularly for years and even had a few club hunts on it. Finds have all but dried up and local hunters have moved on to greener pastures. There were two structures on the property that were torn down many years ago which has left areas littered with trash - and much of it being ferrous in nature. Small coils, hunting with virtually no discrimination and even the ol' TTF technique have been employed here and the finds pretty much depleted.

I started in the thick of the trashy area and bumped the Reactivity up to "2" to reduce the recovery time (that number may be more relevant in the coming weeks ), set the Silencer at "2" and the IRON VOL at "3". A few other customized settings had me ready to start. The iron was clearly evident based on the iron tones but they were ignored by the frequency. Several signals came through that registered as good targets (high VDI values); however, the sound was noticeably different from what a coin would sound like . . . it had a slight buzz at the edges of the area and the VDI numbers would jump and hit the "98" / "99" on more than one pass. Checking them with adjustments to the SILENCER as well as REACTIVITY and IRON VOL, they become even more different from coins making them easier to distinguish and ignore. I dug several and confirmed they were iron in nature.

After 20 minutes or so, I received a clear signal reading in the "90" range followed by an iron tone in close proximity . . . . and the clear signal lacked the buzz from other targets. Circling the area, it was clear that there were multiple targets present. Switching to the AUDIO NON-MOTION DISC, I picked out the good signal and then two ferrous signals - one of which was a loud signal.

Cutting a plug, I pulled out a rusted piece of steel (see the photo) from about 5 inches followed by a nail and finally the 1945 Mercury dime (and the back was scratched when I found it . . . . honest . . . don't worry, my daughter didn't believe me either :veryangry: ). The coin was not under the iron - not saying that - but it was in the same hole as the other pieces of iron yet had still produced a signal that was clearly something worth recovering. Even with the IRON VOL at "0" and the SILENCER at "3", the coin came through while the ferrous targets did not.

I also found several clad coins at depths down to about 5" and in almost every case there was trash in the immediate area when checking it in the AUDIO NON-MOTION DISC mode which had likely resulted in other detectors missing them during the short period of time they were in shutdown from hitting the trash first.

Tuning your ears into what the Deus is telling you when the coil goes over a rusted, odd-shaped piece of ferrous trash (which often produces VDI's in the 90's) and a coin that produces the same VDI (and hence tone) takes a little practice but once you can tell the nuances apart (the subtle differences in the tones and audio response), you will find that you dig less ferrous trash and more keepers from amongst the ferrous trash.

Andy you are exactly right about the language. We have all had machines that we "click" with. We use it repeatedly and become accustomed to the different tones and nuances of that machine. One thing about the Deus that I don't think is talked about enough is the fact that it is adjustable enough to emulate the pitch and tone of the old machine you are used to. The more you can set up a new machine to sound like something familiar, a machine that you like, the better chance you have of learning that new machine. Some of the guys that I have talked to that didn't care for the Deus didn't give it enough time.. they said it was different from what they were used to. The Deus is versatile enough to sound and feel somewhat like the machine that they were used to. It makes the transition easier. If you are new to the Deus try setting it up to sound similar to the machine you are used to.

Hi Mr. Sabisch this is my first post. I am in the third month of using the Deus and struggled horribly with it for the first 2 months.(Although I was finding keepers) Now I'm getting comfortable with it and my finds are improving. I too am pulling silver out of the ground with other junk in the same hole.(2 mercs and 10 rosies, nothing spectacular but I'll take it.)
On a side note. Quote"I started in the thick of the trashy area and bumped the Reactivity up to "2" to reduce the recovery time (that number may be more relevant in the coming weeks ), "end quote) am I reading to much into what you wrote or are you saying something new is coming. HH to you and everyone else.

Andy I think you are spot on, again!. My wife understands her deus whereas I have a job following the noises. I sometimes wonder if its my ears. She has no problem at all sorting the wheat from the chaff.

I used to dig a ton of big iron. I knew the sound of iron but I was trying to find that coin or great target mixed with iron. I still dig the iron but now I think I know when it will be big iron. The Deus does truly have a unique signal on great targets. I have been hunting with it for many months and using it exclusively. I am finally hearing things and understanding. Like "Newuser" said I was finding things immediately but now starting to find the real goodies.

Someone that was involved in the testing opted to do what they were told not to and posted teh video of V3.0

Frank

I would rather avoid taking preorders although as they say "the end is close at hand" . . . . as soon as I get the green light from XP to release the book, it will be posted here and as those that have ordered books from me in the past know, they will be shipped ASAP.

Thanks for the interest

Andy

I was one of those guys who couldn't get the Deus Click.
Since they brought out those WS5 headphones,... WOW!

Personally I've taken it a step further and use a high ambient noise communication headset.
It has ambient noise cancelling and will boost a weak signal into audible range if needed be,... pricey,... yes!
Now I'm able to hear the Deus turning on and shutting down,... great stuff!

Something that should be printed in very bold and large font in the manual,....
"THE DEUS IS A SIMULTANIOUS MULTI-TONE UNIT!!"
Wrap your brain around that and you're more than good to go.

Very happy with V2, noticed the V3 video, ... some people just can't shut up,... probably enthousiasm getting the better of them.

Anyway I guess It's like cell-phones,.... you're just getting use to it when the new version arrives.
Is it Iphone 5 or 6 yet?

Pulled a few coin/iron targets, but nothing in that magnitude... a trained ear indeed.
Who knows,.... very nice tool non the less.

Awh heck Andy if the book is already written and just waiting for the go ahead to release it that means you must already have V3 and been testing.

Some things cannot be denied.

Just funning for sure.

I really can't get into the details but suffice it to say that V3.0 will offer addtional functionality as well as incporporate feedback / suggestions from many end users . . . . including the U.S. hunters who have challenges that those searching sites in the UK, Europe and beyond might not. The upgrade process is pretty slick and goes very smoothly - up to V3.0 and back to V2.0 if desired.

I have made finds at areas I have been through before as well as in areas that side-by-side comparisons with other units have shown that the new version will raise the bar in terms of in-field performance

Andy

I bet the security leak will not be testing V4 though. It's all about trust and RESPECT!!!

Let's wait until V3.0 is released before the V4.0 dates start swirling . . . . . there's a group that is already warming up to start down that path again . . . . I cringe to even see the phrase "V4.0" in a post after the last 6 months

. . . . just send me the coordinates of the sites and move on to your next one . . . I'll take care of the old one :)

Depending on the sites you have hunted - trash content, type of trash, changing ground mineralization, how much audio rejection you did before based on the tones you had set - you may find that different settings and functions may coax the few remaining keepers from their hiding places . . . . but as we have been saying, V2.0 is no slouch and with an understanding of it's ins-and-outs, sites have been picked pretty clean with V2.0 . . . . but there's always room for a little more performance isn't there?

V3.0 simply moves the marker further down the track in several areas while retaining the positives that have been recognized since it was first released
