The most helpful Farmer in town!

Hi guys
Sorry it's been a while but weather has been atrocious for a couple of weeks! Anyway a nice story to kick off with.

So the weather cleared and I set off for my favourite and only fields, huge disappointment when I arrived, the seed had been sown in all fields which means no detecting! I was absolutely gutted. As I was about to leave I seen another farmer in a different field so went over to talk to him, I asked if I could walk over his field but he said no, because he had cattle in it. Again I was about to leave when he said he could put me on another field he wasn't using, brilliant! He took me over to two disused fields and get this, he told me there was a 19th century military camp on one of them. After spending a couple of hours detecting (my best find 1874 half penny) I headed back to the farmers house shared a pot of tea and had good craic about the history of the area. By the time I left the farmer had offered me access to all of his land whenever I wanted, what a really nice chap!
So in total I have another 5 new fields to investigate!
I'm going back this Friday for a full day detecting so I'll keep you informed of my progress.

Hey Mud
I'm just glad I have some new fields or my detecting would have been severely restricted all summer! The Farmer has great knowledge which is very interesting, he also explained why there is so much iron in the fields, he said, any scrap from around the farm usually got thrown into the slurry pit, which then gets put onto the fields! Can't wait for Friday, please be nice weather.

Foggy Sounds like your on your on your way to great relationship with the farmer. They usually know quite a bit of history and they are all connected with other farmers. You might end up with a lot of farms to hunt on. Good luck , Ezra.

Awesome news, Foggy!!!

Like Ezra said, that farmer knows other farmers, and if you get to be good friends, he'll surely turn you on to his buddies!

Good luck, and like everyone else here, we can't wait to see those finds!

Hi guys
Looks like I'm going to be rained off tomorrow so I headed out today for a couple of hours. I went onto the field where the farmer said there was a 19th century military camp. I covered maybe a tenth of the field but found no military evidence so far, however I did find this part hammered coin. I'm still researching It but if I were to stick my neck out, I'd say Henry l silver penny, very early 12th century. If anybody knows any better, please let me know. I have a good feeling about this field:clap:
I have found a few of these small hammered coins in the adjoining fields, they are usually wafer thin, but this one has a good thickness. If I get a positive ID I'll let you know.
It looks like Monday before the weather clears again, I can't wait that long

Coin looks to.be 19mm diameter

Hi guys
The coin is a Richard I (1189-1199), Short Cross Penny, I'm quite pleased with that!

Hi goys
I sneaked.out today early before the rain, same field as yesterday, and found this interesting bell, not sure if its a modern or old one. It has interesting engraved pattern, I can't make out what the pattern is but it's different! Not sure what its made from, it gave a good high tone, good positive signal, I'm actually starting to think silver, it has a grey colour to it and would probably polish up but I'll wait until I get a positive ID. I still have a good feeling about this field:clapping:

Dimensions: 27mm tall x 33mm diameter at base.

Hi guys
Thanks for the comments, I have an update!

It's not a bell, I have been informed its a candle snuffer! It would have been attached to a long thin rod. I still don't know what type of metal it is?
So the farmer has told me there was a military camp in this field, I have now covered one third, my finds so far are. The above snuffer and penny, two very worn buttons, copper half penny, lots of shotgun primers, lead, tin cans and rusted iron! Little evidence of a military camp:lmfao: The last day I was out I did start to find quite a bit of small pieces of lead, this happened to me before in one of the adjoining fields and I got a lot of good finds, fingers crossed.
I'll keep you all posted

Hi Guys
Out in the same field again today and i'm starting to find signs of life, finding odd little things which could be associated with a camp on the field or at the very least human inhabitants:clapping:
Getting more buttons (unfortunately worn smooth), lots of smaller bits of lead and more copper objects. I picked the below, odd two objects to post today, the round looking disk thing is bronze i think, one side of it has been silver gilt at some stage. When you look at the disk tell me if you see a picture of something:shrug:
The smaller copper object looks like a decorative pendent worn on a necklace? I'm looking into this at the moment, any suggestions welcome.

Foggy

Images up in 10 minutes sorry!

Thanks guys, I'm still trying to find a bit more info on the above objects, I'll keep you all updated! Also all of the significant and unusual finds from this field will be posted on this thread.

Guys I have an update, the round object above, the one I described as a lump of bronze, well it's actually 3 coins fused together! I cleaned it a bit more and looked at it through a jewellers loop, there is definite pattern on both visible sides and the joins can be seen. Does this qualify for a hoard?:bouncy:

Hi guys
Back in the same field today and I'm starting to get a bit of military activity, here are the best of my finds. There is a nice brass military button, a really badly bent hammered coin and three musket balls, one with mould mark, one fired and one not.

Foggy

I wonder what happened to that coin? It sure took a beating from somebody!
