The most stable PI I have used...

A

Is a Schiebel AN-19/2.
I bought this detector on ebay for $232.00
It has been modified by Don Young.
Now has (a variable SAT control).
This detectors audio is unlike any other detector.
The threshold makes a clicking sound.
I like to set it at about 1 click per second.
A very deep target will sound like 2 clicks per second and so on. Shallow targets sound like a regular detector in all metal.
I took the detector to the beach (ocean with black sand) for the first time today. All the other PI's I have taken to the beach false when hit by the waves & you have to be careful to keep the coil level. Not so with this one !! I have owned 2 PI's a Barracuda & a GoldQuest SS.
I did a couple of tests today.
I dug 12" hole in the wet sand put my 14k wedding band in & covered it. Checked it & got a 2 clicks per second for a signal!!
Dug another hole 10" and dropped in a nickle that I had just dug at around 8". Checked the signal and it came in at least 5 or 6 clicks per second! There is alot of black sand at this beach!
The black knob on top of the contol box is the mod.
I only had about 45 mins. to test it today but I LIKE IT!! THANK YOU DON!!
Oh yeah it air tests a 22 Cal.(lead bullet only ) at almost 6".

It is the standard detector around the world for mine detecting. Is used by U.S. Army. Is very sensitive, not sure about sensitivity to small gold itms.

Matt,
What's the response like on thin gold rings (ie nice ones with diamonds !!) at depth ??

Air test on a thin gold ring (the size of a dime & thickness of a paper clip) 10".

with the mod. hits the test piece at 5". Heres a pic. of the test piece. The test is done with target piece standing on end NOT LAYING FLAT!! . The piece of metal in the test target is 5/16" with width about the size of a paper clip.

Hi Matt and all,
I bought a Schiebel AN19/2 about four years ago, as I was keen to see how it performed as a treasure detector on the beach. I had assumed from the spec that it would have a much higher sensitivity to small targets than anything that I had so far designed, or had yet seen from other manufacturers. It came with a test piece that simulated the firing pin from a Chinese type 72 minimum metal mine, and, if my memory serves correctly, it should detect this at 10cm.
As is sometimes the case, the reality did not match the expectations of the unit as a beach detector. It would certainly detect the small test piece at the specified range, but it turned out to be ordinary magnetic steel, as tested with a compass needle. Any good PI would equal or exceed this test on such a piece.
On non-ferrous coins the detection ranges in air were as follows

Matt,
You probably have seen this web-page, but it refers to the latest upgrade for the Schiebel detector. I am curious to know how the upgrade compares to your modded unit.

Eric,
There also appears to be another version of the same detector, the "ATMID"....All Terrain Mine Detector. I think this refers to the upgrade? It also refers to the detector's ability to handle difficult/iron soils, etc, as well as some discrimination. Is there a VLF side to this unit, or just PI??
Looks like quite a versatile unit, and if Austrian handguns (Glocks) are anything to go by, then it should be well made

Hi Eric,
Your right this detector without the mod. is NOT VERY stable & has less depth. When I turn the mod. OFF it is a whole differant detector!
Eric here are some testing specs.what do they mean.
I know your machines have a 3 pin connector for the coil. Why does the AN-19/2 have a 8 pin connector? Is It using differant us delays at the same time?
Thanks,
Matt (SD,CA)

Matt

Hi Matt,
The extract from the test spec is interesting. It looks as though the sample pulse width is 10uS and the sample delay 6uS. It didn't display the sort of sensitivity that one would expect for 6uS, however, that is what the spec says. The second delay of 40uS is another 10uS sample that is subtracted from the first. Standard practice with PI's to minimise low frequency interference.
The positive and negative 130uS pulses refer to the transmitter drive. They use alternate positive and negative current pulses (bipolar), so that there is no net magnetic field that could set off a magnetically activated mine.
The standard search coil has separate transmitter and receiver windings, hence the two rings in the coil and the greater number of pins in the connector. Maybe one of the coils is centre tapped or there are separate ground wires to account for the six pins. A little investigation with a test meter would probably sus it out. Unfortunately I don't have my unit any more. I will have to keep my eye on Ebay

Matt,
Those depths aren't too bad, but your Goldquest SS (Please tell me you still have it ) will improve upon those depths by at least 30%.
I find my GQ to be as stable as any detector I have used if that's how I want it setup, but I run mine hot....yes, there may be some audio chatter, but I will not miss any targets.
I like the detector to "talk to me", not at a level that will mask deep signals, but at a level (shortest delay possible) that will allow those DEEP signals to be heard. I know some people feel that the detector that is all but silent, until a nice, clear target is heard, is to them, the perfect detector...but what are they missing ???
The answer is a lot of good targets that simply don't have a nice, clear audio.
I think you will do well with your modded PI.
Safe hunting,
Tony.

Yes, I sold the GoldQuest SS.
I dont agree on the unstable threshold.
YOU NEED a steady threshold or you WILL miss deep targets!
In San Diego we have some of the hardest beaches to detect due to the amount of black sand & high salinity.
30% deeper with GS?
Wow! 16"-17" airtest on a mens gold ring. You must have a HOT ONE ! The one I had hit mens rings in the 12" to 14" range (air test).
HH, Matt

Matt,
It's just got to be the differences in beach sand that we both have.
I can get a definite diggable 16" (not air test, but buried in wet salt sand) on men's gold wedding bands with no problems at all.
Tony.

Hi Matt
Sorry, but I don't reconize the name. Please excuse.
Was this a new Goldquest that your referring to or did you purchase a used one ?? There is certainly something out of whack with this story. If it was a new unit, and operating the way you claim why didn't you return it to be checked out ??
I have hunted the same beach's SD, and Inperial Beach area with a Goldquest, and haven't had the problems you mentioned.
My depth's were certainly greater than what your reporting in a test, also.
Mr. Bill
