The Old XS

New member
Mine is still trucking along, I just love the night life with its light screen. One thing I never could tell though was fast from deep. It doesn't seem to make much difference on anything I have tried. What can I do to actually see this feature work.

If you've been using the XS for a while then this should be evident to you when you make the adjustments to suit.

Try starting with the on board defaults and altering adjustment from there. With some sites and ground conditions , you may want to use IRONMASK set at -16 or AM(SE)and listen out for EVERYTHING.

I can tell FAST is effective without DEEP on whilst using Explorer in iron or badly trash infested sites. There is a definitive response factor that stands out like the proverbial dogs.......

In an air, above ground test or in a test "garden", place a non ferrous target in amongst ferrous targets and you should obtain an idea as to how having FAST on or off works. There are other factors to take into account but this is a good point to start. The separation of the targets should be quiet notable.

The relationship of Explorer XS and EX2's RESPONSE(try AUDIO 1 or AUDIO 2)is set to the RECOVERY FAST and the amount SENSITIVITY either to AUTO or SEMI will also change it's reaction in the way it separates targets and detects desirable targets amongst the trash.

There are certain ground conditions that will require altering those adjustments to suit. The coil type and size that you use in the ground type and conditions will also be the determinate on whether you would use BOTH FAST and DEEP with THRESHOLD at a just audible set.

When using BOTH fast and deep, there are also limitations as to how much of a discriminating pattern in SMARTFIND SCREEN should be used with the EX XS. There was a better response in the speed by which the target was processed in the SMARTFIND screen when they brought the Ex2 and the SE with a degree of discrimination or rather with what you programmed to detect in a totally blocked out discriminated pattern screen("Cherry picking)" I think it's called.

I still use the XS as a water chest mounted unit with whatever coil I feel either , stock 10 1/2 , M/L 7/12 , Platypus , Joey or the WOT 15 inch which I found does not require the DEEP on in order to search.

The XS can still find just as well as the other two in CERTAIN if not the same situations as the EX2 and SE.

In my opinion, the adjustments of FAST and/or DEEP may have been included, so one could make alterations to suit a differing coil sizes and coil shapes in the many possible ground conditions that the Explorer could be used in to gain desirable result.

Hope this info has helped

So how did you get your XS water proofed? And what ext cord do you use on it? I bought a hip mount kit from Kelly Co. and it was great in the early days but after a short while the cable developed an internal open and there was no replacement cable available for them.

Had to make my own extension cable or rather cables. The parts and cable are relatively easy to obtain from many places.

There's a bit of chopping and changing to be done if your doing a waterproof version yourself. Polyurethane or silicone as a sealer works well.

I opted to produce a chest mounted version so I could see the display better.

Charles(NY) has a great reference to his superior after market kit and some other very useful info.

and if you go here to findmall's MODIFICATIONS forum

you'll see some other references to modifying the Explorer for hip and chest mounting and waterproofing as well.
