The Privileges of Adoption

In Galatians 4:5-7, Paul expands on his theme, stressing that Christ has now 'redeemed those who were under the law'. The word to redeem means 'to buy back.' It referred to the price paid to buy the freedom of either a hostage or a slave. As this context indicates, redemption implies a negative background: a person is in need of being liberated.

Galatians 4:5-7 New King James Version
5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

From what, though, do we need to be freed? The New Testament presents four things among others: (1) freed from the devil and his wiles (Heb. 2:14, 15), (2) freed from death (1 Cor. 15:56, 57), (3) freed from the power of sin that enslaves us by nature (Rom. 6:22), and (4) freed from the condemnation of the law (Rom. 3:19-24, Gal. 3:13, 4:5).

Hebrews 2:14-15
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

1 Corinthians 15:56-57
56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 6:22
22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.

Romans 3:19-24
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Having been adopted, at the tender age of 13, I know all to well what it's like to be in limbo at a foster home. To be accepted by, loved, and wanted by someone was foreign to me but welcomed none the less. To have my own family, with bothers and sisters, wasn't something I had known for many years. Therefore, when God tells me He adopted me, loves me, and wants me in His family, I very well know what that means. To be loved by someone - let alone by the God of the universe - is so awesome!
I was given a new life, as a teenager, and again when I accepted Jesus Christ into my life, as Lord and Savior. My life is not my own but belongs to God who purchased me with and by the blood of His Son. There are a multitude of people all around us who don't know what it's like to be loved unconditionally and we, as Christians, can change that one person and one day at a time. I'm so grateful God gave me a family to call my own but I'm especially happy to that He loves me and wants me to be a part of His family. Isn't that incredible?

Thanks for sharing that with us. I praise GOD for adoption and his Love.
