I had a in-depth report typed out and deleted it by accident and am to aggravated to type it again.Hunted less than three hours today at a hammered ball field that DrBob and I almost got skunked at the last time we hunted it so I am pleased with my finds and results,Ray.
PS I hope to hit the old private fair grounds with it tomorrow and will give an indepth report if so

Way to go Ray!! I got out for a few hours today but could only manage 4 wheaties and no silver. The E-trac sure hits solid on those coins in my hunted to death spots.

Glad to see you still pulling silver out the the ball field. Keep it up:thumbup:

Glad you could get out as well Bob and let me know when you are ready to come up this way again.
I covered the left field fairly good with the bigger coil and I think I am going to like it very well,Ray.

I look forward to reading your report, more info please!!

My 12x15 arrives next week, can't wait to give it a go.

Cheers,
Greg

I guess Kellyco sold a number of 12x15 SEFs this week. Mine is on its way too, but unfortunately it won't arrive in time to hunt this weekend.

This coil sounds like the ticket for me in many of my sites. It appears to offer more than the stock pro coil, yet is not the backbreaker that my 15''WOT can be.Who has it currently? Do not see it listed on Kellyco.
Thanks,Jason

Nice finds for sure! is that coil 15in long? hows th wieght compared to a 15in WOT?

I have mine in hand and can't wait for the weather to clear up here so I can get out and do a thorough Head-To-Head test with it against the Pro Coil. I also have a SEF 10x12 on the way. :clapping: I will tell everyone right now, it is a heavy coil mounted up to the E-Trac, I never get detecting fatigue (My back gives out way before my arm ever does) but this one is going to be a workout. It is at least twice as heavy as the Pro Coil. Really looking forward to anything else you may have to say about it Ray ;) I hate when you type up a detailed report or letter only to lose it. :throw:

Don't rule out getting one of those "swingy thingys" if the weight worries you. Guy at a club hunt, who was definatley getting on in years, had one setup for the etrac and 15" coiltec. He happly detected all day........sort of made me jelious lugging mine around all day (same setup) and I'm only 36yo.

I've only had a quick go of my 12x15 and christened it with a 1945 Penny, really impressed so far but need more time with it. Just need some rain to soften the ground so I can get back out on the ovals/parks and see how it goes with the deepies.

Cheers

I'm glad that coil is working out for you, Ray. I can't wait for the snow to melt so I can hunt with mine too. Sweet finds! Nice Silver Dime Trifecta!

Just got my 15x12 for my Sovereign GT. Haven't used it yet but from most threads I've read on the net people prefer it over the WOT. Deeper, more sensitive, pinpoints better, more stabile allowing higher sensitivity settings, and seperates better. Many remark at just how sensitive it is to tiny objects like earing backings and that it seperates really good, allowing them to hunt in much more trashy areas than they first expected. Also read of many who remarked that they were surprised to not only find deeper coins at their worked out spots, but also to find shallow coins in trash or standing on end that somehow this coil unmasked while others didn't. That reminds me of the old reports on the WOT but they seem to be even better for the SEF.

Here's a few pictures of it compared to my 10" (not 10.5") GT coil. The one with the 10" on top of it has both coil's bolt holes lined up for the most part. Shows a little more weight towards the tail end, which is good because I think that would put less stress on your arm. Coil looks of very good quality and many say it's the deepest coil on the market while still retaining sensitivity at those depths to coin/ring sized targets.

Also, here's a coil weight chart I put together. A "W" means I weighed the coil. A "*" means somebody else did this for me. Most of these are Sovereign coils but a few FBS ones are listed as well and noted. As you can see, the 15x12 is lighter than the WOT. In fact, if you were to use it without it's coil cover it's .6 ounces lighter than the stock GT 10" coil with coil cover. For that reason I amy leave my cover off and spray the bottom with spray on bedliner like a lot of beach hunters do and get it's weight to about that of my stock coil. Not bad when you think about it for this size coil.

I almost bought the 12x10 and am glad I didn't because the 15x12 is smaller than I had pictured in my mind. If I would have bought the 12x10 I would have been let down by it's size in comparison to my 10". I think I must have been looking at photos of the 18x15 on the net and that threw off my size perspective. Don't get me wrong, it's a big coil, but not nearly as big in person to me. I also thought it would feel much heavier than it does in my hand, though I haven't hunted with it yet. I am making a lightweight custom shaft for my GT and have already saved more than the weight of this coil over my stock coil, so my machine is already going to be lighter than a stock GT using the stock 10" coil. I have plans to make my GT even lighter with a few other mods too.

By the way, crunching the numbers I think the extra coil cable length on a GT needed to hip mount the box is roughly about 3 to 4 ounces. Since I'm building my custom GT light to avoid having to hipmount on those longer days I might just wack this coil cable down in length. That alone will get it to about the 10" coil's weight, and even less if I opt not to use the coil cover.

I had my concerns on all these larger coils and spent the last few months digging into the dark corners of the web looking for any and all information on all the larger aftermarket coils, from the S-12 to the round Excelerators, WOT, and of course the SEFs. I wanted max depth on coin/ring sized starts while not losing any sensitivity to them at max depth. If you read the "official" field test of this coil you might think the 12x10 is deeper on small coins. Well, it is by half an inch on a cut quarter penny, which is probably half the size of a half dime. For a while that turned me off until I saw a picture of one of those "coins". Any smaller coil will get deeper on something that tiny. From what I've read this coil will get deeper than any other on any penny/dime sized coins/rings or larger, and for me that was the final straw.

CritterHunter thank you for the in depth post and pictures. It was exactly what i needed.:beers:

Your welcome. I love reading extensive articles on this kind of stuff and not just "Hey, I like this coil!" Yea, OK....but WHAT do you like about it? And for that matter I like to hear what they don't like as well in detail on coils or detectors.

I fired up the 15x12 yesterday on my GT for the first time just to make sure it was working. Didn't really do any mask testing yet and air testing would be worthless with the amount electrical noise in my house. I did play with pinpoint though and found what Kered said to work perfectly. If you walk the coil towards your feet while sweeping it back and fourth the target will disappear just when it's at where the two coils meet at the bottom of the "V" on the top of the coil.

I hear people do something like this with the 10" and other coils but I've always found I could center the target in pinpoint just by hearing how it's slightly louder directly under the middle of the coil. Still, when I tried that with this 15x12 it was obvious that this thing has a much bigger hot spot area in the center which would make pinpointing my normal way difficult. Probably not with a little practice but I like how the "V" marks exactly where the target is by walking the coil backwards. Thanks for that tip.

If you notice the picture of the 10" over the 15x12 it's obvious that a round coil only has it's greatest width at a very small spot. With the WOT being 14.25" (?) it would be roughly as wide in the picture as the SEF is to the 10", but only dead center in a small area. The 10" and SEF have a 2" size difference and so does the WOT to the SEF. Thinking of it this way when looking at the 10" compared to the SEF coil you can see that the WOT should only be wider at a small spot right in the center and then rapidly get smaller than the SEF coil over the rest of it's surface.

The SEF would also still be slightly taller than the WOT acrossed most of it's width. I'm still not sure just how this shape of coil works but would assume it gets the depth of a 15" with a much tighter detection line from tip to tail for better seperation. From the reports on how well this coil works in trash I'd assume that's right.

If anybody has a WOT they can lay under the 15x12 take a picture of it like I did for the 10" Tornado so we can see the difference in dimensions better to confirm all this.

See the Sovereign forum for further details on these coils. We have several threads going on right now with further details. Play nice, though. Remember it's a Sovereign forum.
