Sisters from California discover each other while training at Fort Jackson

By CHUCK CRUMBO

The State Newspaper Staff Writer

Yolanda and Kieshia Williams traveled all the way from California to Fort Jackson to learn they were sisters.

Each of the two Army privates, who graduated Thursday from basic training, never even knew the other existed.

Then, at the start of basic training nine weeks ago, they lined up in alphabetical order as members of Company D, 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment.

Although Kieshia, 18, is two inches taller and two years younger than Yolanda, their drill sergeant kidded that they looked like sisters.

I wonder why 1 person is lookin to the side and the rest are looking straight ahead-Maybe Art can tell me-He mite know ifin he was in the service in world war 2

This is all part of basic military Drill and Ceremony (D&C).

The soldiers are Passing in Review. As each platoon passes in front of the Commander reviewing the troops, the command "Eyes RIGHT" is given.

All heads snap to the Right exept the far Right column of the unit. This is to keep the unit going in a straight line forward.

Meanwhile, the ranking person at the front of the unit gives a hand or sword salute and the guideon (unit flag) is lowered by the bearer parallel to the ground in salute until the unit completely passes by. At which time the command "Eyes FRONT" is given and the salute is dropped, the guideon is raised and the eyes and heads all snap back to their original positions.

Here are some examples. You can see that no matter the unit, age, uniform, country or circumstances the basic Drill & Ceremony of Passing in Review is observed.
