Thinking about a new form of treasure hunting...

Of course it's too hot (here) to do anything at all right now, but fall will be here soon (although we don't get cool weather until November). Looking forward to being able to get my detectors outta the closet and getting out to do some hunting. I'll do other forms of treasure hunting too (as always) but I'm just not able anymore to get out and do the kind of digging it takes to dig a privy or some of the other more strenuous digging activities. Been seriously thinking about getting into geocaching to replace some of the heavy digging activities. Got some friends who are addicted to it and have been trying to get me to get involved. I don't know a lot about it. Was wondering if any of you are doing this and if so, can you share some info, tips, etc?

I was doing it for awhile and found it to be a lot of fun. It is a great opportunity to spread the word of God, I would place a christian coin in the cache for the item I removed. It IS a great way to get out, people come up with some of the most fantastic ways to conceal the cache right before your eyes.

Sherry, Casey and I have done it and we have enjoyed it. They don't do it any more and rarely get a chance to get out. Try www.geocaching.com for loads of information

I've done some geocaching in the past. It was something that my hubby would join me in and he won't metal detect at all. He liked the gps hunting. There really aren't any treasures to be found but it can be fun. Well actually I have heard of a few treasures being put out by someone seems in NY or somewhere but mostly you just find geocach buttons or ittle knick knack things. The idea is to leave something for what you take. Some cachs only have a log book to sign then you log that find on the net. What we liked the most about it is that it led us to some very interesting places that we had never been to before.
 
Thanks Mark! Appreciate the input! I had already thought about replacing any items I take with something to spread the Word! I think that's a good idea! What did you use?

Yeah, I was sent to that site last night and loved it! Spent hours looking and reading and learned a lot. I went ahead and joined. It's too hot to really get too involved right now but I'll have the tools there that I need when it cools down. In the meantime, I can keep on learning. :)

Tim doesn't do any of the things that I like to do. The closest he ever came was when we went to Franklin, NC to do some gem mining and he really enjoyed that. It'd be nice if he'd take a liking to this but if he doesn't, then I'll just do it by myself and/or with my friends who enjoy it.

I was really surprised to find that there are literally 100's of them hidden all around me! Who knew!!! I'm already loving this! After spending hours of reading, watching videos, and playing around on the site, my main question is which GPS do I buy? For now I have downloaded the geocaching.com app onto my Droid (my phone). Not sure how well it will work or how accurate it will be, but I'm not real thrilled with the thought of using my phone out in all kinds of conditions and taking a chance on damaging it. And who knows, it might not work very well. I did quite a bit of reading and comparing of the different brands and models but really have no clue which one to buy. So many choices out there! I'm convinced that I need one that locks on to a satellite and holds it even in the thick canopy and mountains around here. I don't want to spend mega bucks on one, but see no need in buying a cheapo piece of junk that wont get the job done and will be of no real use to me in the end. Any suggestions????????

even use their car gps. I have a Garmin Etrex and it works great. You can get one for about $100 or less. they have better models that do all sorts of things, but if you just want it to point to the cache then you don't need all the extras. When you get close start looking for a hollow log or some place that it could be hidden in. In your area be careful of snakes! Have a ton of fun! :)
 
I have a TomTom that I use in the Jeep when I go on trips. I thought about that and looked it over. I kind of thought it might be a bit big and hard to handle. It's worth a try, I reckon. :) I was thinking a hand held GPS would be better since it looks as if quite a few of the ones hidden around here require some hiking to get to. I'll give it a try and see how it works!

to take us back and dig the dirt and carry it for us lol. I like to go to the one where you did your own dirt but I'm really not able anymore to do that,.

I was fortunate enough to find some coins about the size of a four bit piece and a couple of other similar items at our local christian book store.
I think I'll introduce Barbara to it as she loves trying to figure out puzzles.

I use the Garmin Etrex Venture HC looking for hunting sites and old house seats here in the hills of Ky. It does real good keeping locked in on satellites down in the hollows where you have a lot of tree cover. Finds the satellites quick too. It has a color screen which is easy to see in bright sunlight too. Whatever GPS you decide on make sure it has a high efficienty antenna, so it will stay locked in on the satellites when you get in a lot of canopy cover such as trees etc. Just my two cents worth, hope it helps.

Sounds interesting, Lisa! I might have enjoyed geocaching when I was a lot younger, but I would be unable to go anywhere and walk through the woods, parks and etc. to find what is hidden there by someone else to find! I'm sure you will enjoy doing it and hope you get a good GPS....which I know nothing about, for I am just an old foggie and not up with the modern contraptions like it, I-pod, newer telephones and etc. Don't have the money, the strength nor the fortituide to do something like that....but I would love to still be able to go :detecting: and find those hidden goodies! Oh well, I enjoyed it while I was able to do so and I know with all your energy and hunting desire that you will do really well and you will bless others by serving God in all you do! May God keep on blessing by watching over and protecting you wherever you are and in what you do in His service! I hope Tim can enjoy it, too, and go with you! Amen! :angel: Ma Betty
 
I really enjoyed it! Been a few other places too. I enjoy almost all types of treasure hunting and have been at it for many years. I'm not able to do a lot of the things I used to do and seem to be giving up more and more activities. I reckon it's the combination of fibromyalgia, arthritis and aging. I don't consider myself "old" but at almost 47 (next month), I ain't a spring chicken anymore either! I've lost a lot of strength & stamina and I'm pretty much in pain 24/7.

Mike, I tried it with my TomTom this morning. I picked a place that is supposed to be very close to the road. It would only give me the turn by turn directions and say I had reached my destination while I was still in the road. Got out my phone and found that the compass, radar, and readings were very unreliable and quirky. :-(
