Thinking of switching from a Sovereign GT, to a Safari

JASONSPAZ1

New member
I like my GT but I want to get into the FBS detectors again. The safari appeals to me for the simplicity of the discrimination method, and the FBS power.I had an Explorer SE, but I felt as though I did not need all the extra options, and I did not care for the smart find and the way discrimination worked. Any advice for me on what I can expect on a Safari over a Sovereign GT. With the Safari it seems that I can switch disc modes more quickly without going into menus within menus. and everything "important" that I need to adjust can be done on the fly.

Thanks in advance
Jason

Hi Jason,

I have a Safari, and I love it. You can switch to a pre made program with the push of a botton. You can make your own pre sets and switch back in forth with a quick push of a botton. It's so easy to make your own and save them. You will have to get use to the sounds, but once you got it look out, it's a great machine. I also traded my GT, but I got the Excal II 1000. I my never use my safari except for a back up. I wouldn't trade my new Excal for any detector on the market. Today I found dimes at over a foot in disc. mode. who knows how deep It will hit them in all metal. The nice thing about the Excal is you can go from the water to the dry sand or in a park, or where ever and it can be raining cats and dogs, no problem. Back to the GT, I too didn't like how a pain it was to go from disc. to all metal. They should have put a toggle switch on the handle that pushed forward for all metal, middle position disc. and back for all metal pin point. That would have been ideal and easy. Anyway good luck in your discision. Gene

if i understand right the excal is a water version of the sov?????? same brain just not so many switches. is this right are was i told wrong?????????

That's funny.

I'm thinking of doing just the contrary.

I have a Quattro, and will get a sovereign soon. I'll keep the Quattro, though.

In comparisons in the field, I noticed the Sovereign has an edge over the quattro - both in their standard coil version- as far as deep targets are concerned.

The Sov gave smooth weak signals, whee the Quattro couldn't lock on the target.

I also plan to use a larger, heavier coil, and I don't trust the stem locking system of the FBS models. If it breaks, you'll have to send the unit back for repairs, while traditional stems are easier to replace and feel stronger.

I think the Excal is different from the GT in some ways, The all metal has a more distinct sound then the GT all metal. That's one thing I didn't like about the GT, it has more of a whine sound to me. The Excal II has more of a beep beep sound in all metal and Is much easier to distinquish a target. Don't get me wrong the GT is a very very good machine, i just prefer the Excal sounds and it's water proof. Gene

Nick,

If I read your post correctly, you mentioned about the possibility of getting the GT. If you're interested, I have one in perfect condition. If you are in the market let me know.

Yes Rollie, and thank you for your input.

Unfortunately, I have already mine reserved. The guy comes back from holidays on sep 20, and we will meet later next week.

Plus I'm living in Ole Europe, that could be more complicated..

The Sov I will get is not really a bargain, but it's only 5 months old and less than 20 hours on the counter : the guy finds it too heavy.

Thanks all the same;

Nick

I've only been metal detecting for a year now and love the hobby. I first bought a x-70 with multiple coils, found some good finds but decided to buy a Safari also. I love the machine. I've been using it in the black sandy areas of the coast. My x-70 is hard to use because of the mineralization but the Safari has no problems. The biggest problem I have is with ME trusting the signals. This machine can detect deep. My latest find a week ago was a good tone, registering 31 on the screen. After digging 10 inches I almost gave up thinking, "It can't be this deep, it must be a false signal." Using a pinpointer in the bottom of the hole, I got a signal. One more shovel full pops my first CSA SC button. The guy I was hunting with couldn't believe it. He told me that his friends, with more experience than me, had hunted over this spot and told him there was nothing here. I guess they needed a Safari.

The Safari is a no nonsense coin getting machine. I have found Barber dimes at 8 inches easy.

I would highly recomend the safari...found it to be excellent. It is a real switch on and go machine literaly.A friend though swears by the sov and has done for years. You will not be wasting your money thats for sure.Im scepticle of some of these new machines like deus or gold mask...they seem like a risk but with the minelab safari there is no risk in wasting your money or time.
