Third time out with the Sovereign more silver.

The park produced silver again.I used the XS Sovereign.Again my goal to cherry pick for silver 180 meter digs only.The two Washington Silver Quarters 1961D and 1952D were a foot from one another.Six wheat's the oldest 1923 and a 1952 King George.Another dozen of screw caps and clad.HH Ron

Walker,LOL there is always room for improvements.I'm usually happy with a silver coin or two per hunt.Most of my hunts are only a couple of hours,lots of other things to do.The three hunts in the park was cherry picking for silver.The IHs and early wheat's usually start at 173 and climbed to 175 so with these hunts I eliminated that possibility.Most parks in my area requires a lot of work to find a silver coin,which three to four hunts in between sometimes with no silver.Again I always strive to find more and work less but as it is with life,we end up working harder and get less. when you say cherry picking are you talking about using full dicrimination or just digging the readings above 175. when i used the sovereign i got a lot of silver dimes that would only read in the 130's but would give a signal at full disc. now i'm trying to learn the explorer xs.

Chuck,I use no discrimination,both the notch and discrimination knobs are turned all the way down.Lots of trash in this park and sometimes the tones and meter readings blend in and are hard to separate.My perfect target is a 180 reading that starts out as a lower number and climbs.Never had a Silver dime read lower than 179 which was a seated dime and 176 on a half dime.I'm not certain of the age of this park,but the silver I found isn't that old.I don't usually cherry pick to this extreme but the park covers a big area and if I get some older coins I'll dig the lower readings.I've been invited to a group hunt Sunday I'll bring both the Sovereign and Explorer both are excellent detectors.HH Ron

Ron I've been thinking about using my Sov with the Sunray 12.5" Intruder coil and cranking the disc to max for deep silver park hunting at a park that the Explorer guys tend to do very well in, but their dialed into silver only mode.

Any reason not to crank up the disc to squelch out all the trash? I've heard some say you may loose depth, and others say it's rubbish

that's the way i used my soverign most of the time. i would check every signal in pinpoint and if the location didn't change it was usually something good. you still get the wheats and indian heads. i'm trying to learn the explorer xs. i didn't know there was a way to hunt silver only.

I am new to the sovereign and I have been digging deep pennies at high disc and there seems to be no loss of depth that I can tell. Could you please explain the "location of target moving"? Just tryin to gain tidbits of info to learn from! Thanks.

You won't lose any depth, I have dug dimes at 9-10" at full Disc. You just won't get any nickles unless they are in the same hole with a dime or quarter, so listen for a high tone that drops to a lower tone and then back again. That's the way I coin shoot at this one park where I test most of my machines. It's lousy with pull tabs, bottle caps and those darn screw caps that sound like a quarter. But, it is literally covered with money! My knees don't like dirt fishing any more, but it's still fun once in awhile. I believe your depth is determined by your SENS, so run it as wide open as you can stand. Personally, I hunt in Silent Search all the time and about 10-11 o'clock and just listen for those faint sweet chirps and cut a nice clean, deep, wide plug and see if the signal tries to rise. Of course I always use a nice probe too, like the Uniprobe or S-1 and a drop cloth so I don't any messes. The bigger plug protects the roots makes it easier to replace and it is pretty darn hard to tell where I was digging.

if you're running full disc. check any signal that you get. switch to pinpoint and if the signal is in the same spot dig it. ocsassionly you will get a nail but most iron will pinpoint differently in pinpoint than all-metal. if its pretty close to the same spot i dig it and occassionally will get a coin or a nail.
