THE sick student who urinated on poppy tributes to World War I veterans was angrily condemned yesterday by the grandson of one of the soldiers.
John Levers left a poppy cross at a war memorial to honour grandad Edwin, who was killed on the last day of the battle of Passchendaele.
And he was horrified when drunken Philip Laing, 19, was caught on camera desecrating the memorial after a marathon student pub crawl.
"He's a drunken idiot," John, 49, said last night. "He should be made to clean the memorial at the very least.
"He must have been out of his tiny little mind."
Laing, who is the same age as many of the British troops in Afghanistan, collapsed laughing in the gutter after his vile stunt in Sheffield.
He has been charged with outraging public decency and could be carpeted for bringing Sheffield Hallam University, where he's studying sports technology, into disrepute.
Laing has apologised but disgusted old soldiers are in no mood to forgive him.
Ken Riley, 84, of the Normandy Veterans Association, said: "This character must be the lowest of the low. When I was his age, I was fighting in Belgium.
"They should send him over to Afghanistan - that would sort him out."
Superintendent Peter Norman, of South Yorkshire Police, branded Laing's behaviour disgraceful.
He added: "As soon as it was brought to police attention, officers began tracing him so he can be put before the court."
A spokeswoman for Sheffield Hallam University said Laing's tutors were investigating whether he was guilty of a discipline breach.
In a statement, Laing, who will appear in court on Thursday, said: "I'm deeply ashamed of this photo and I'm sincerely sorry for my behaviour.
"I didn't realise how much alcohol I had consumed and also hadn't eaten since lunchtime, which worsened the effect. "I have no recollection of the events in the photograph, although I recognise that this does not excuse my actions.
"I apologise unreservedly for any offence I may have caused."
Laing had been on a freshers' pub crawl run by Carnage UK, who organise similar events around the country.
One of the organisers claimed: "We are not irresponsible, or promoting binge drinking.
"Our events are heavily focused on group identity and social and ethnic cohesion."

NOT encouraging binge drinking???? On a pub crawl????
Maybe we should be looking at these "companies" and "promoters" and ask what moron decided it would be a good idea to have them involved with students.
As for the halfwit himself, I actually cant think of a suitable punishment for his crass stupidity.
He could be thrown out of University, but would that really be an apt punishment?
I think the public humiliation that he is going through just now, is actually far more severe than a fine, community service or even prison would serve.
Give him a ladder a bucket and a scrubbing brush and tell him to get cleaning.
THEN get the MD of this Carage UK to clean it again, then just to make sure, get the halfwit responsible for HIRING this company to clean it a third time.

Yes the act is disgraceful but everyone is allowed one mistake surely.
