Jeff, it sounds like a pretty easy way to find sites, but I think you omitted the part about getting permission from the landowner. If you get permission fine, but I think we shoot ourselves in the foot if we go onto other's property without their blessing.
 
I thought all state land was off limits to metal detecting.

Exception being specific areas in some state parks that are posted on the internet as being available.
 
I have read the new rules and don't see where they prohibit detecting on all state owned land.

I would really be happy if you told me I was wrong!

I looked one time but could not come up with anything, one way or the other. I just accepted it and forgot about it. I would love to check out some old locations that are on state land, back in the woods.

I would be tempted to go deer hunting with my rifle and a detector. Hard decision which to use when I don't see anything and am getting bored/sleepy.
