This mornings romp with the Funkyfones..........

Went down to the park by the creek. Plenty of tabs, screwcaps, and hacked up cans.
Had a nice breeze and the water running over the rocks added bit of extra sound to contend with.
That's the background setting.
Have already mentioned that the Funkyfones are too loud for me, so there is an inherent problem trying to use them in comparison to other phones which I have used.
Had to run at min volume instead of full volume the way I normally do it. This makes it harder to hear the weaker hits as they are barely above the threshold while the stronger hits really blasted me.
This also messed up my perception of target depth.
Point here........ Needs a volume control that will not interfere with the tone quality of the phones while allowing the Sov audio to be set to higher levels.
Noise blocking was excellent. Could not hear the water running in the creek, and the wind noise was just a low pitched buffet that was easy to ignor after just a minute or two.
Phones are very comfortable, even when wearing glasses.
Cord seemed too stiff and heavy. Was a bit of a nuisance at times.
Point here........ It's just a cord, but would like a lighter and more flexible version.
Tried planting nickels and zincs close to tabs and screwcaps to see if the variations in the response patterns would clearly distinguish between trash and treasure. It did not work out. Possibly because the coins were fresh plants and did not give a good representation of real targets.
Had to go mainly by meter response.
The nastier trash had the usual nasty response. No problem there.
Even managed to find a couple pennies.
To sum it all up, they are good phones. Only a couple things need to be done .
That's my opinion. Those who have different hearing or personal tastes may disagree.
There it is, F.O.D.........
Remember...you asked for it <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">

I appreciate your testing effort.
You are lucky to have acute hearing, just like my wife Jane. When she hands me her ipod to listen to a song she likes, I have to crank up the volume. Of course at 71, I expect that my hearing has degenerated from when I was younger. It never occured to me that these phones were too loud, but that is easily fixed by adding a volume control, or as you suggested, a voltage dropping resistor network. It's just that I don't like adding stuff that might break or get corroded and noisey. You know what I mean. And a lighter more flexible cord is a good idea as well.
Thanks again for your great input. If you decide to modify the headphones to make the volume more comfortable, please let us know what you did.

Glad you are happy.
The Phones that I usually use were toned down by adding a resistor inside a new plug. Tested first with a pot rigged in to determine what would be a good value range.
By the way.... my hearing is messed up quite a bit. About the only problem in the Sov freq range is if the phones were a little too sharp at certain freqs. Find that some tones can be very irritating.
