Those damn metal screwcaps!!

Does everyone have as much trouble with those as I do??? I swear, I dig at least 10 of those every day I'm out. I can't seem to discrim them out without losing the ability to find certain coins.
Today I dug about 15 of those damn screwcaps. I hunted for about five hours today. Three hours at one large park from the late 1800's that gave up a bunch of worthless 1960s to 1990s coins and a ton of trash. I did find my first bullet though! One 2" hole had 5 dimes and two pennies in it but they were all recent. I was very disappointed with that park. I guess its been combed over real well.
I checked another 1800s park and found a 1993 penny at 6 inches. Figured that one had been filled in so I ditched that park and went to one of my fav parks also from the 1800s. Didn't find anything worth while there either!!
A friend of mine let me search his backyard, found three wheaties '20, '35, '35 and a dog tag.
So how the hell do I stop digging those things!!

Most of the time I run in Smart mode, then switch to Digital if the cursor is jumping around a lot and I'm not sure about what I'm hearing.
Are my settings the problem or is it the discrim? I'm posting a pic of the smart screen, maybe it will help. Thanks.

I think your setting are right on track same as mine excep for the Discrimation pattern I use Iron Mask - 10 the pattern may be clipping off the sound of the crown caps enough to throw you off,I know what you mean about Crown caps in ST.Louis I used to live in Collinsville,IL across the river from ya I used to go hunting in the STL Quite a lot and I had the same problem.I do have another ? for you your Max limits ( volume ) is @ 6 is that the way you control your volume threw your head phones and do you use head phones?? Im sure you do but if not you will loose alot of sound before it makes it to your ears. This is the way that helped me most crown caps are in the 0 to 5 inch range so I dont dig em unless there over 5 inches deep every once in a while one will sneak in on ya.HH Frank

I'm using the headphones that came with the unit; unfortunately. I was looking at buying a pair of gray ghosts but its hard to justify spending another penny on the unit when I have yet to find enough old coins to make the orignal purchases worth it. I have an X1 probe as well.
I've honestly only found a handful of old coins in the 2.5 years that I've had the unit; the rest have always been less than 50 years old. I probably have a couple hundred coins that I've found, but hardly anything old.
I'm trying new sites, I have done the research, I have several old maps & drawings; but since I don't know anyone who detects and thus have to go by myself, its not exactly safe for me to detect in some areas of St Louis if you know what I mean.
I've only lived here for 3 to 4 years. I used to live in Minneapolis, MN. Can't wait for summer so I can go use the XS at the beaches of the lakes in MN. I know of a few old parks there that might have some goodies as well.

I am with you Jeremy. Sometimes they (screwcaps) sound too good not to dig. I dig a few everytime out then the sound seems to register in my head and I stop digging them. Kind of like hearing the difference between pre-1984 penny and a dime. Keep digging you never know what you will pop out

I dig them too only because alot of the places I hunt give up IHs. In some of those parks I am sure they're still there because they come up close to screw caps. In places that I have hunted that screwcaps been that bothersome I have started cherry picking only digging deeper signals. Last time I had to do it I came away with a barber dime and 3 Mercs... There's more than one way to approach sites like that.

Jeremy, I can recall my first screw cap indication way back when.I turned up a 14 karat gold HS ring.Darn those screw caps

I would try bumping the variability up to 10. This will give you more pitches between targets. This worked for me, let me know if that works for you.

You live in St Louis... theres quite a few explorer users in that area and good ones... they may have cleaned the place out on ya! seriously though I see those guys post lots of great stuff, but they seem to have spread out away from that area invading nearby areas ... any way gotta besome good stuff left there... you should open up that screen at least to iron mask -10 like was said before and concentrate on digging the deepest signals only in those trashy parks.. flattened screw caps do have a pretty good tone to them but generally read left of silver, and if your variability set to 10 you can get your ear tuned to distinguish a screw cap from a coin

The last pulltab for the day, odark30, food and beer across the street, turned out to be a $500.00 scrap value ring

Just funnin' about... Don't get caught in Tower Grove though... The parks here are tough. And they've been beaten to death with Explorers...
Good hunting... Guvner..

You're in fill anyway... I dig anything repeatable that's deep... Like Jim said -10 or so. I was at -8 for a long time only to discover GD at -12. Hmmmm... The better targets sure began to hit harder even though they were way above that.
Guvner..

The lower half of the screen, is it you custom creation? If so I would like to knoe what you did.

Nice and interesting pattern. You might find it interestng to open up the FE coins area to restore the threshold. Then try Ferrous and iron will give a nice low tone with the lower bottom right rejected in your pattern the high tones will be the upper right of the screen for silver and copper. What you will find is there are almost no more nulls of the threshold in ferrous with the FE coins area open.
I use one very similar to yours with the exception I just mentioned and have great luck in heavy trash.

Hello:
My name is Kevin and I live in Columbia SC, What would you think is the best types of settings to be using on my Explorer xs. I have had the machine for about a year and a half and still do not really know how to use it. Im just an amature when it comes to using it. I mainly hunt with the factory preset as I really dont know how to program it.. Anything you can help me with would greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kevin
