I talked to the people at one of our banks and was told they 'were allotted only so many $1 coins by the Mint. Once they are gone, they (the bank) will not have any more until the next $1 President coin is created'.
So much for seeing these in circulation.
The U.S. Mint has become the new Post Office...they are not issuing money for circulation, they are creating 'collectors items' like the Post Office has done with stamps.
Problem is those who collected stamps gave up mainly because to buy a 'new' stamp it turned out that stamp was a whole sheet of stamps - each on different but on the same sheet. So instead of being able to afford the single stamps they used to sell you were forced to buy whole sheets of stamps.
Collectors items aren't selling well on eBay if you have something like postage stamps to sell because of the economy. If you had time and money though one could buy up a lot of stamp albums and at a later date have a great collection...but who can afford to do that and who has the time...harder days are coming (and so is Jesus).
So back to the coins - don't expect to see many lost in playgrounds.
