Thought I had a half dollar

Was at our youngest's ball game this afternoon with the F75 LTD along to do the play and parking areas. Hit this stomping signal in the parking lot with an ID bouncing 87 - 88. About 3 inches down was a sterling ring. It looks like it has been sized. It is loose on my thumb. About $3.50 melt value. Quarter is next to it to show size.

Only bounce was flipping between 87 and 88. Was in 2F tone and it just squealed loud and long when sweeping over the ring.

Would like to get a gold one this size!
Cheers,

Good one, at least it was silver. I got a good tone and a vdi reading of 86-87 this morning with a depth showing of 10." I just knew I had me a silver quarter...or at least a dime. I dug about a 7" deep scoop and the good sounding target was still in the hole. Removed a little more dirt and saw the edged of something silver. Yep, the edge was the only thing silver on the white and blue Clorox cap. Oh well! HH jim tn

Jim,
I hate those can parts. Old tin cans seem to leave the bottoms in one piece while the sides corrode. Those bottoms turn up ID's around 70 to 76; make me think they are deep dimes ... and then; you know the feeling. They fill the pouch until I get to a trash can. Aren't even worth recycling.

I know they sound good and we all make mistakes but they usually cover a lot more area in pinpoint especially if shallow..to dig or not to dig is the question but an educated ear and lots of time in the field usually cuts down the odds....

Dan,
It's those deep tin bottoms that pin point pretty small but not quite dime like that I can't resist digging. Sometimes it will be a nice piece of brass or copper, but much of the time, tin. Sometimes the shallower ones mask a coin or two. Maybe when my joints hurt more than they already do, I won't dig them.
Take care!

Usually around here in the parkways those pesky tin bits are watch cases/tins or the remians of them. Here's one I got last summer, Yep, I died when I finally opened it several months later after letting it soak in oil. Until I found out the contents were glass, but it being 6" deep or so, loved the potential!

Wow! I've found a couple of beat up tins with nothing in them. That one would have taken my breath away upon opening. Too bad they were glass.

Nice hunting ElginTim!
