Threshhold Disappears...can anyone help, please?

Hi

My machine is cranked up in multitone conductive and I have a high theshhold setting. Whilst detecting, I often lose my theshhold and I don't think it is anything to do with nulling. I have to raise my coil to get the threshhold back. I noise cancel alot (does anyone manual noise cancel?). Please help. Thanks

I noticed an area like that at an old church that I have hunted a couple of times. The area is about 5'x10' and will not produce a threshold tone with any setting. This is the only area that this happens, and there is no iron nulling. No buried utilities of any kind in this area either. I would like to hear some suggestions or opinions on what may cause this. I thought maybe it was just a heavy mineralized area of soil but it only does it in this area of the front yard of the church close to the building. It also does the same thing with my Garrett GTI 2500.

Is Sensitivity manual or auto? How high is it set? Does decreasing it make any difference? If you throw a coin on the ground, will the detector pick it up while you are 'nulled'?

Hmmm, "cranked up" might be an issue but first, what happens if you put it in all metal? What do you hear?

ive run into that a few times myself. sometimes it dont disappear completely it seems to get quieter. i did the master reset and reloaded my program and that seemed to fix it. i think it may be a software problem brought on by the auto ground balanceing. i aint sure of that. i thought about calling minlab and running a few questions by them but i havent yet. it hasnt been that big of a problem yet, and i dont want them to tell me to send it in to get fixed. (dont tell no one cause i dont want to void my warrenty, but i took my detector apart and made sure all my plugs and connectors were clean and tight. made a huge differance in stability and really seems to dig deeper. got all the dust out too.)

...but it appears the machine is adjusting itself or something..?

It does this at random times, but mainly when I raise the coil off of the ground.

It was in manual sensitivity of about 22.Why should the machine re-gain its threshhold again when I raise the coil? Luv my e-trac though!!

Put simply , the threshold nulling is mainly due to whatever is being rejected.

If you open the Ironmask screen complete to All Metal or an open a Smartfind screen without any level of rejection, then nulling of the threshold should NOT occur.

Soon as you start to reject any amount then a threshold sound will null out.

just to clarify a little more....so that everyone doesnt think im stupid....when i lost my threshold, it was like a volume reduction of the sound. sometimes to the point i couldnt hear it. it wouldnt come back right away no matter what i did. it wasnt nulling out either. i did check my headfones against another pair and had the same results. also my batteries were brand new. so i did the master reset and started checkin my connections and gave it a good cleaning on the inside. i did this in december and havnt had any problems since..... other then the snow of course- thats been a problem.

Actually it can and will null out in wide open all metal as well as any disc. settings if you go over an area with a heavy concentration of coal cinders,Ray.

Ray, you got me on that one.
Heavy concentration of coal cinders in the soil....hmmmm? I don't believe I have ever encountered such conditions in the soil.
I wonder what these coal cinders could possibly contain that would cause a nulling of threshold on the Etrac?
Thanks

I remember on my X-Terra heavy nulling or losing threshhold at a country school I hunted. And Ray is right about the coal cinders. The only time it happened was back of the school where the coal chute was. That definitly was a problem area, wasn't a large area but I remember I just skipped that part.

Not sure but they will lower auto sensitivity down to 2 or 3 and you are lucky to get 2" depth. I have old 1880s school house I hunt a lot and about a 100' x 200' area is where they dumped the cinders and ash from the coal furnace and it is almost impossible to find anything with any vlf machine I or my friends have tried there.Perhaps someone on here can give an explanation,Ray.

That may be the situation at the church I was talking about. If your standing facing the church this happens at the left of the front door, they may have had a coal stove there years ago. I don't think I have dug a target in that area before. I may have to go over that area in all metal and dig a target just to see what the ground looks like below.
