threshold questin on the SE and deep faint sounds

grumpy

New member
Hello;
I have a question about the threshold sound on the SE maybe someone can answer while its to cold to get out and use the thing.
If you hit a target that is a deep silver faint sound and you have the threshold up to high will it not sound off or not cancel the threshold sound???
I run the threshold on my se at about 1/3 the way up and was wondering if I might be missing some of the faint sounds from deep silver or? because of this. ???
Thanks for any info on this subject.

If you run your threshold too loud it can mask a deep sweet sounding target. Your Threshold tone should be set to a point where you can hear it as a quiet hum to the ear. That way you will always be able to catch those soft signals.
Hope this help. Later Grumpy.

A very low, slight, barely, audible hum. Makes it easier to detect a slight increase from a faint signal, and if the threshold goes silent, you know a target pulled it down into the null region, a rejected target. (if it's set silent - you won't hear something pull it down).
Run the threshold too high (loud) and a slight increase make not make it up pass your set point so you won't know there was a faint signal increase.
Headphones help you set the threshold to barely audible and makes it easier to detect a slight change in the threshold.
I always use quality headphones.
Some machines have a slight circuitry noise, don't confuse this with threshold. If circuit noise is there, set the threshold to just barely a tad higher than the circuit noise. Otherwise you won't know if your threshold is set into the null region. And if your too deep into the null region, then an increase in a faint target may not make it up out of the null region allowing the signal to be heard.
I hunt by audio using both TID and non TID machines. Always audio. Even my single tone machines I hunt by audio. The machines that generate an analog type single tone have character to the single tone. Listening to the language of that single tone and learning it will reveal allot.
Typically, the TID display and the audio are separate circuits. On a deep target, you may get an audio response and no response on the TID display. Typically, the TID display limitations cause this. Also, they are getting good on the TID in regards to common coins and the depth reading on coin objects.
So I have both types of machines - just can't get away from using quality headphones and hunt by audio. But that's just me - and my 2 cents worth. HH :detecting:

Both answerers above are great Grumpy, I answered this post a few hours ago and now it's gone:confused:

Oh well maybe I hit the wrong key.

Nope right key, just mixed up the two forums:blush: I posted to it in the classroom forum. I be ok tomorrow, well maybe..

Thanks guys; And yes I got both your replys Gary and thank you. I posted both places seems you get a better variety that way and varied opinions and answers seem to be what makes this all work. I think I have been running to much threshold because of my hearing. I use Gray Gost and Sun Ray head phones both so they are good but I thought you needed a good sound coming in. I think now I will go to a good volume for targets and then back the threshold into a almost null spot and try for some silver I know has got to be there.
Thanks again as always you guys are a great help.

I find it better to run the machine at full audio volume to process the audio signals, and then tame it with the headphones to your likings.
Sorry that I forgot to include in my reply - lol - had came back to see if I could but this will suffice I guess. :rage:

If your hearing is bad like mine is the volume is not loud enough for me even at max with the Headphones you are using and had to add a amplifier to get them loud enough. Now I tired many different headphones trying to find one loud enough and found a set that is loud and well built and very comfortable too. I now use the Troy Pros on my SE and don't have to use the amplifier anymore.
Like everyone is saying you should run a slight threshold, too much and it will mask those weak signals.
