Threshold Question

Actually it is also a null question.
First off, I have the XS, not the XSII.
I have never been able to hunt with Threshold audible, since the adjustment on the original XS leaves a lot to be desired, which was corrected with the XSII.
I have 4 years of hunting with the XS, just below Threshold and my finds in my opinion, sure have not been shabby.
I went into the archives of this forum and found this question being raised before and I saw replies from CC, Jim and a few others stating that they basically would not think of hunting without threshold, that the nulling over iron tells you lots of things, etc, etc, etc.
Well, I do not see the point in listening to nulls. I hunt most of the time -12 to -16 Iron mask and I love hearing the iron hits, if they bother me, I will go to maybe -10 to -8. However, I feel I have not lost a thing by not hunting with a Threshold.
Would I use Threshold if it was a very faint one? YES, but it just is not possible in the max settings to get it on the original XS. To turn down the volume of the headset, would be defeating the purpose of wearing them, so rather than put up with the annoying hum of it, I hunt one notch below.
Open for comments, but again, remember I hunt with the original XS...

Don,
I would say that you should use whatever works best for you. Personally, I use the Explorer II for which the threshold tone adjustment is nearly perfect. A slight hum is perfectly acceptable to me. Then I can hear the nulling caused by the masking/discrimination. That is the way I like it.

Glenn

because the original Explorer and 3 clicks down on my GGs give me just the right volume. As for the turning the headphones down that is fine but does depend on how good your hearing is. I can see your point though because I would really not like changing even one volume notch on my headphones. As weird as it sounds the EX2 and my G. Ghosts would not give me the exact volume which I like and am used to.
I don't think hunting without a threshold is hurting you a whole lot, as long as you look for sites in IM-16. It also depends on what type of targets you are searching for and the type of site. Coins I think would be fine but I question all the itty bitty things mixed in iron. Without knowing how heavy the concentration of iron is it is impossible to adjust your swing speed around it. (what I think is just as important as settings)
and no your finds have not suffered, just the rest of us have looking at them

I think my method of hunting in -16 IM intially to find the sites really helps and that is when I slow down considerably, not only in sweep speed but movement.
I think someone who has not used the original Explorer cannot appreciate what I am talking about in that the lowest audible setting on it was too loud for me ears, just annoying.

I have not checked lately, but I usually am 8 or 10, and I know when I first got the XS FOUR years ago, it was mentioned then about changing this and that setting and nothing helped, and I also remember the vast majority of us saying that a low threshold was not possible on the XS, it was either have one, that is rather loud or go one notch below and keep your sanity
I am very happy with how I hunt, I just don't see all this talk about nulling, man, dont worry about it, hunt with -14 to -16 and learn to love the chatter.
Maybe because I hunt mostly wooded homesites and 200 year overgrown fields that I am the way I am

Yep, -14 works for me
People also say that you need a low IM to get it all. well, I have seen a couple of fairly serious relic guys hunt at -6 to -8 and I'm pretty sure they weren't missing much. I think what it comes down to is learning the best method for you, and learning it well. Some will always be better than others because metal detecting is no different than anything else in this world.
Even a blind squirrel can get a nut sometimes (maybe even without using a threshold)

gotta take what I can get for now. But if someone drives over to detect with me I always try to choose an older quality site off in the distance somewhere. I've got some sites researched that date to the 1700's but they are an hour drive and when I hit them I want it to be a dawn till dusk packed lunch hunt just in case they say "I'll let ya hunt for today only "
