threshold setting

Ive seen a few posts on setting the threshold for the pitch hold. One was mentioned a method of turning down the sensitivity, turn on the detector in PP, set the sensitivity then switch over to disc. Next the old just set the sensitivity and disc then turn it on..... set and leave. Next, ive been wondering about the threshold when it first comes on. I normally turn it to just audible because i like to know when i go over a nulled tone. But.... i was wonder about setting it based on the tone of a nickel. drop a nickel on the ground.... the reduce to just audible. It might not matter how you set it as long as a weak target can break the threshold.

CJC says setting the threshold during a 6hr hunt certainly should not take more than 6hrs! Its not a set it and forget it systems. I am glad to read that users are trying different methods and I hope you discover one that works for you. I set and reset the threshold many many times during a hunt. The advice that's a real eye opener is to set the machine up, find that weakest signal and try to change your setting to make it better! You will surprise yourself to what settings can change that weak tone, It will change the way you hunt! I spend many days just experimenting but time well spent. I have even found that at times I could achieve a tone/signal in the null (silent) that I could not get with a threshold ? Just turn the threshold down till its silent dig everything that peeps! Works well on an iron infested beach.

I rarely hunt with a silent threshold because i like to hear the nulls.... occasionally taking a scoop off the top on those that sound deep. What you just mentioned is what im talking about..... because that weak signal will change the pitch hold. Have you noticed on certain beaches your threshold going back to a certain pitch..... most of the time a higher pitch. If you set your threshold to that pitch..... it likely would put you in silent mode at the start up pitch. I used pitch hold occasionally on the Exp, but cant say i care much for it.

I usually run with mine in the silent mode. If i get a weak signal, I take a scoop or two. If the signal sounds better (stronger) I keep digging to see what it is. Although, I do dig every signal. If not, I might miss something good. Don't want to do that. LOL !! :surprised:

lildigger...... thats basically what im saying. If you set your threshold to a nickel..... just audible your normal setting will be below your ability to hear it and you wouldnt be required to always swing that scoop in front of the coil. I may test it today at the beach.
