My wife volunteered at a hospice thrift store for about 4 years and taught them to not miss the gold and silver. When she first started they had gold pendents and chains marked at a dollar or two when melt on them was $30, $50, $70 or more. We donated a little digital scale and showed them where to look up calculators for spot price and total melt value.

This one was not the place she used to volunteer. They had some gold rings and chains that were priced well above melt ... but they missed this piece of silver.
