"Thunking" Good Silver Day

Well, this is one of my best days, or should I say hours, ever. I almost didn't even go out. I had two hours to kill before work and thought to pass up the bike ride as the weather is going to be below freezing next week. Enjoy the videos as there may be a long break coming. We'll see.

I found 3 keepers in just over an hour. The third was that zinc at 8" from yesterday (video - Would you dig this?) The second video below is my best contemporary silver coin (less than 100 years old). I don't think I'll ever find another but there aren't many detectorists here so who knows.

This first target is a small child silver ring I found at 8" solid. I was amazed to pick up such a small ring. I played with the settings. Always trying to keep the videos education. I found the ring in manual 30 and switched to auto and you heard what I did. A thunking sound and I probably would have missed it as you had to be pretty much right over the coin.

This next video is a 1925 2 Reichsmark - pics at bottom. That was a lot of money back then, hard times. Ok, not very educational here. But I did call it! heheheh ;-) It is 10 grams (a quarter is 6.)
Listen to my words towards the end. They were true, I was thankful...

Congratulations Albert, on the the silver finds both the ring and great looking silver coin.

Sounds like we are all learning here.

Congrats on the great finds! Always good videos form you!

I had an odd recovery this morning. I had a decent penny signal, but I couldnt pinpoint it. The pinoint always went over about 6 inches to where I got a perfect iron null. I decided to dig out the iron first. When I cut the plug, I pinpoint in the hole and found a penny! There was still iron underneath, but when I did a re-scan the penny signal 6 inches away was gone. I've had targets close to, and mixed with iron but never one quite like this.

That is great Jason! Congrats. So true about the learning like Ken said. I love making the videos and playing with settings, showing the screen, hearing the sounds, etc. It gets us all thinking. For me it's like a private tutor as I get some great tips.

Regarding your find, another poster (might have been in that 8" - 12" coins thread I started) was talking about coins near iron and how the pinpoint of the iron can pull you off center into thinking it's iron. It's good to keep in mind. When you can get more than a two way signal and the pinpoint is off center, you dig where the signal beeped! A lot of this is feeling and experience. Your example is a good one.

I dug deeper iron today. It pinpointed where the beep was and I thought and said it could be iron. It ended up being what looked like a section of coat hanger with a loop in it partly. Loops will do that. And it was in the corner of the hole. I am glad I dug it just to verify what I thought it was.

Thanks as always for the comments guys,
Albert

Albert, on your second video with 2 deutches marks 2min19sec. you have another good signal in the right side, I think so. :poke:

LOL Stasys - I am not sure. I thought it was just a late hit on my faster sweep across the target. BUT there are lots of Euro coins all over - could be. I dug some of them in the beginning to learn the E-Trac (great training) but now walk over most of them unless I hear something near them.

Good video thanks for taking the time!

I noticed on the ring while watching your screen the FE dropped to 01 many times, just like the silver dime I dug yesterday

Cool finds!
Thanks for posting

WTG Albert! :clapping:

Thanks alot for the informative videos!

I have been viewing all your posts and just wanted to say thanks for all your work. The videos are all well done and very educational. Thanks again!

Hi, fairly new etrac user here. I have an Excalibur II that I was using prior to the etrac, so it's most definitely been a learning curve. Ive been out to a home site several times now, and there are a ton of targets there, but I often get the same type activity you got on the small silver ring. I generally don't dig those, as I am still learning the machine, but should I be? I get the same type of high tone, sometimes only one direction ( more often than not), and the thunk immediately afterwards. There is a lot of iron at this site, so is t possible that I am missing a whole slew of prime targets by not digging these? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I see folks all the time here and my local club pulling all kinds of things that I can't seem to locate. Thanks in advance, and happy hunting!!
Shawn

it's a hot topic lately,,,, you can help us all by digging a few of these targets to find out the skinny on the thunk,,,

Shawn - I agree with Grouser, especially if you are learning a machine. The more you dig the more you can connect and understand. Yeah, if you don't dig iffy signals or signals you don't understand you might dig less trash. But, the danger is you might be starting bad habits - like an internal discriminator or sorts, but only it might be off. Notice the ring, even though jumpy never really looked like iron - the depth was there, you have to dig those I think (depending on the site).

Thanks guys for the comments and I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Me too and I love getting the feedback.

Goes4Ever - I remember seeing the Fe 01 in the field but to be honest not after. I'm glad you said that as I have heard others mention it. I will keep an eye out. Again, great example of me learning here and thanks for pointing it out!

Good hunting,
Albert

I was playing around with the response setting on my etrac. I changed it to pitch hold and it seemed to eliminate the thunking sound on mine on deep targets. Next time you have a deep one can you change yours to pitch hold and see what happens.......

Definitely and great point. I think MarkG played with pitch hold alot with thunking. It is sure interesting how it moves the threshold pitch to the last target. Clearly a good tool, in paticular on deepies, I would think.

BTW - You can easily test thunking by just lowering the sensitity on deeper targets, at least in my soil. Which has me wondering, I wonder if thunking occurs for people who get coins that read consistently in the iron range? Know what I mean? In other words I wonder if both thunking and iron readings are soil dependent, and if so, what are those conditions?

I would love some responses to these questions.
Thx,
Albert

Never thought of that one.........

I dont think it may be soil dependent, wont it happen even on air tests?
