Time to dig more of those "40" readings:

New member
Had two "40" readings this evening which screamed back at me when over them in the pinpoint mode. As a result just had to see what they were, one was a coin spill of 2 quarters, 1 nickel and 3 pennies all laying on top of one another. While the other was a matchbox SWAT team personal carrier. Guess its time to pay a little closer attention to those "40" readings...

Nice Job!

But, to maintain my sanity, I'm going to keep 40 notched out and hope that the good stuff will ring in at 39.

I'm going to go the opposite route and start checking more of them out, especially if they are coming in loud and clear. Will let you guys know if I start finding more good targets at 40...

Mtnmn - Glad to hear that. Just you & and another forum member have reported good finds at 40. I have not, but still dig 'em just proving that I'm not insane. I find that targets id 'd at 40 are mostly small pieces of aluminum and/or steel when recovered. Do you noice cancel every 30 minutes or so as manual suggests ?

Yes, I noise cancel on a regular basis, mostly because in my area ground conditions can change very rapidly. Was out this evening for a little while, but didn't find any "40" signals that sounded interesting...

Had a lightning grounding rod read 40 and it was a loud and proud signal. The rod did not protrude above ground but could have possibly damaged equipments tire. I dug five foot down about and was unable to remove it, The farmer used four wheel drive ATV with chain to remove it. Once chain was on it took less than ten seconds of pulling to remove it. The rod was like one inch diameter and turned out to be longer than a full sized pickup truck bed with the gate down. That is a lots of copper I would think, Tried to guess its weight but was hard to do, probably it was over 15 pounds of copper easy.

15 lbs. of copper would be worth a pretty penny (literally)! I haven't been finding anything good at 40 lately, but always investigate those 40's sounding a little different from the norm. About a week ago I dug a penny that was reading a solid 40 ???, only dug it because it sounded like a coin and it turned out to be one. When there's time I'll pretty much dig anything that sounds coin-like, no matter where they are reading. Unfortunately they almost always turn out to be pennies. Moist ground can sometimes really throw off the penny readings, but not the dimes and quarters. Haven't figured that one out yet.

I usually notch out 40 at times, I'll probably start to dig them just out of curiosity, I don't come across too many 40's signals, 'Ya never can tell....

I notice that different safari users have slightly different VID readings though. On my machine silver quarters are always a 38, silver dimes 37, and all my silver halves 38, I only had a silver coin hit 39 once (which I have open anyway) and it was very shallow. I have never found anything but junk at 40, so it is closed on my machine because it chirps at too many rocks in the woods when its open, it almost drove me insane.... Hey, why are those penguins stealing my luggage? almost drove me insane.

Fog, I agree on the different tid readings for many of us. Like yourself, I mostly hunt woods and fields, so I tend to keep my trash setting at low density for a more accurate reading on recoveries. The Mastering the Quattro book does indicate settings/techniques in one region doesn't necessarily translate to like readings in another location. My silver quarters and dimes may ring in at both 38-39. Sometimesi, it seems the more dirt that is removed from the hole (cleaner reading), the more the tid will id as 39.Ocassionally, the graph id bar on the bottom of the control box will point further right, to the "i' in silver, like a couple of my barber dimes had. Now,that's exciting.

I learned my machine in coin mode. feel pretty confident with coin. Perhaps I am switching from coin to relic too much. I am told relic mode is better in the long run to really get the most info from the sound readings. Do you agree? I am working on learning/using relic mode now. My understanding is that in relic the higher the tone the higher the numbered reading. This is supposed to help me make a better guess as to what the target is better than coin mode because minus numbers on coin mode give off high pitch tones as well as high numbers.

If I use Pro Coil I will notch out 40.If I use 6X8 I will leave it open does not have iron junk effect it as much as Pro Coil.
