Tip on how to protect screws on Explorer from rust

I was at the beach today and another Explorer hunter showed me his Explorer and what was happening to the black screws. They were rusting. He suggested applying vasoline on my screws before they did the same thing. I got home and started thinking what I could do to protect them. I thought why not apply Clear Nail Enamel on them. I now have my screws protected from rusting with a layer of clear nail enamel.
