Hello im soooooooooo tired of rusty iron!!!1 Why does the x terra 705 reads very rusty iron as a good target.

When you swing too fast it can register as a high tone... but it will sound MUCH different that a coin, at least to my ears. I almost never dig +46 or +48 unless they sound "good". Copper and silver coins have a much sweeter, smoother, solid tone. Also, check out Digger's book... he refers to "circular discrimination"... picture a clock... 11:59 is very close to 12:01... much like -8 is very close to +48 on the x-terra 70 or 705. If you get a TID of +46 or +48... go into pin point mode and check it again... often it will be revealed as a -6 or -8... rusted iron.

So to recap: swing slower over the target, from multiple directions and check the target in pinpoint mode.

also, I've used a few other machines/brands and have always encountered some iron registering as a high TID... i.e. I had a Teknetics Gamma 6000, and rusty iron would often register as a 98 or 99. This is not an issue unique to the X-Terra line

A 3kHz coil would help too. I hunt a lot of sites that are dumping grounds for square nails, and I pick my way through 'em digging very little trash.

MEV, since your using the DD type coil here's something that might help you. When you get a target, go in to AM and wiggle your coil from side to side and drag it back towards you and when the target gets to about the outer edge of your coil and the numbers drop in to the 20's or lower most times it's going to be iron and the last tone you hear will be a iron grunt. But if their is a small nail or other piece of iron in with or even touching the coin you will get the numbers to drop and hear the iron grunt and that's when it gets tricky, lol.

I've dug up alot of nails that have fooled me, but I've dug up alot of nice old coins that had a iron grunt with other tones that were not all that great but something about the tones told me to dig it even though I was hearing a iron grunt also.

I NEVER notch out #46 & #48..... I like finding half dollars and I've found several silver quarters that showed that high of numbers.

Iron is a problem for all of us and I do not care what kind of MDer you use. It gives us problems....

The solution to your problem is within your statement.....READS a good target. I'd suggest to not use the TID as your sole indicator. Audio response is more reliable when it comes to deciphering the "wrap around" of old iron. I've commented on how to reduce the amount of buried iron that you dig, several places in my eBook. But check out the "three rules of consistency" ,starting on page 66. HH Randy

I use the stock coil mostly to ingnore iron though you will dig some if it is round and been in the ground awhile do to halo effect.I would also look at what number you have disced out I know if I have +2 or +4 makes my machine hit more iron in some places,i usually just run it with all the negative numbers disced out.

Have you tried to reset it to the factory presets? I find rusty iron all the time out prospecting and its mostly a negative number when i check it in coin mode. Try AM in coin mode and see if that helps to get a better reading on the numbers. . Jess

I always dig Iron sounds like that, but even though iron with a constant good tone will fall to 46 and 43 alone when it is a 48 there is always something of noble metals underneath according my experience.

There are many ways to help ID the iron on the X-terra's. A 48 or 46 (even 42) that shows ALL the depth indicator segments is almost always deep and/or large iron. Any time there is an iron 'grunt' or a negative ID# that comes up in between a good higher tone/ID#, it's usually iron (38, 40, -8, etc...). There is a chance it could be a coin next to iron, but that is almost never the case when I dig them. When you get a hit that you think is a coin, be sure to pinpoint and find the exact center of target & re-scan the target, then circle the target and hit at different angles. If the target loses its solid ID as you circle it, or a -8, etc... pops up, it's most likely iron. Any ID#/tones that skip over numbers for example, a 42 that drops to a 36 but misses the 38 & 40 in between is usually (aluminum) trash. A 48 is always iron for me so far, but if it's only showing 2-4 segments on the depth indicator, & after sizing up with pinpoint mode and the target is coin sized, I will dig it anyway. I still dig some iron, but these tips have helped me to ID the iron much better. Good luck & HH!
