To buy or not to buy- Red racer

Stoof-tabsallday

Well-known member
Hello gents!!
New proud owner of the Fors relic, and was looking at the CoRe and also the racer series.
I found a gent that will sell me his gently user red racer pro pack for half what it costs new. Still has a year of warranty too.

So my question is, considering I own the relic already should I pick up the red racer 1 because it's a great deal or just wait for the newest nokta or save for racer2?

I like the layout of the racer series being more normal display.

Just curious if it will be a good add or a step down.
Thanks gents!!

R1 is a killer machine that in the right hands will put most detectors to shame. IMO at half price jump on it. Does it have the small coil?

Yes. Whole pro package minus the cheapo headphones

Well I just pulled the trigger! !

I find the small coil and the stock coil work the best for me , as far as tone and so on .

I would keep what you have and get the impact when it comes. I keep a deus and the red racer but when the impact comes will I be selling one?

Well I picked it up. Couldn't argue with 400.

Well, the dale fell through.
He had it listed on ebay as well and auction closed there.
Ahh well.
Thanks for the input gents!!!

Maybe I'll just save a bit and go for the racer 2 or the gold racer.

Oh well, blessing in disguise. The Red Racer is a performer no doubt, but with the old style stock coil you would have received, it also is about the most ergonomically challenged machine as well. You would be better off to save a few more bucks and get the Racer 2, better physical package, better designed stock 11 x 7 coil plus you will get all the nice added features that Makro incorporated into the Racer 2.

You have the Nokta Relic, 2 coil package. Heck, your ready to go.....you don't need Red.

Yes the Racer 1 is a killer machine, I don't think it misses anything in it's range.

Haha true, but now I have this little voice saying "you need the racer2" lol.
I'll probably just wait for the impact, unless it doesn't get released for months.

I'm not mad about the red racer. Probably for the best.

I am waiting also on the Impact its May so well it has to be coming soon well we can hope right  but not to soon gotta save some banana's !!

Hey, you want to be watchful and careful when you get those "little voices" telling you to buy a new detector ... even one that is a duplicate or triplicate of one you already have. I know some people have an amazing compulsion of doing just that at times. Most "little voices" in their head than imaginable! Ever hear of such an affliction? I know Oregon Gregg is aware of that impulse bug affliction that can affect some at the spur-of-the-moment in his local region.

I will have to agree with Oregon Gregg, however, that with the Nokta Relic, which is my #1 all-purpose detector, there really isn't a 'must-have' reason I can think of toe get an original Racer. Matter of fact, the newer Racer 2 might not even be something you 'need' to have, but it certainly can be a 'want' to have and the Racer 2 is my #2 all-purpose detector. I also consider it my main-use urban Coin Hunting detector.

In my opinion, a savvy hobbyist who is limited to owning only one detector could have a Nokta FORS CoRe or FORS Relic, or a Makro Racer or newer Racer 2, and be well fitted for most detecting opportunities they will face. A more Avid Detectorist who wants a little more versatility, or two or more models to complement each other, can pick-and-choose from these four models, and even add the FORS Gold + or Gold Racer to their detector battery as more 'special-use' units. In the end, whether it is one of these detectors or a complementing mix of any or all of them, the owner is going to have some of the best performance available on the market today at-hand.

Yes I agree I don't NEED it.
I'm finding a stable full of tesoros at the moment lol.
But I love the relic, and can't see anything lacking enough to actually need another.
:)

LOL Monte agrees with OregonGregg. Wow !! a first, so I printed a copy of that post and I am headed into Walmart to get one of those frames that you can frame achievements/Documents etc in.

And Monte, I have been ignoring the voices in my head lately, trimmed the herd down even. Only have 4 Makro/Nokta machines, 1 Tesoro and 1 whites,..... only 6 machines. 6 machines is not compulsive, 6 machines is necessity :smoke: That seems to be a good break point, 6 is a necessity and 7 or more is compulsive. Monte how many machines in your arsenal ? lol

Ok off to Walmart to find that frame..........

It can be easy to have too many detectors, or let me say a lot of detectors. If all are functional and can be used often in most hunting environments an individual selects, then that makes sense to me as I have been there often, or most of the time, for several decades. It's when somebody gets too many of one particular make and model, or when they seem to hang onto models that they felt were replaced by better-performing units and the old unit just sits around doing nothing and will seldom, if ever, be used again, that I feel they have too many detectors.

Even really good detectors that can perform well in some tough conditions can cause someone to load-up on too many similar models. Then I can see trimming them down. Last September on our 2nd Welcome-to-Hunt Outing, I took along several very good detectors of mine that can work well in the ghost town settings we were searching. Tough iron littered places, to be sure. I had some along for folks to borrow, if they didn't have a good working model for those environments, or for sale so I could trim my detector battery.

These were all 'excess' Tesoro models I had, and their simplicity and very good performance for those environments had them all sold and not borrowed. An original Bandido, Silver Sabre II and Eldorado all went to new homes, but that's because I till had some of my all-time favorite Tesoro models, and that trimmed my personal detector arsenal to only include three favorite Tesoro's. I will have it trimmed to my two top favorite units, the Bandido II microMAX and Silver Sabre microMAX, probably by the end of next week as our 3rd WTHO is the 19th thru the 22nd, based out of Wells, Nevada. I will have my excellent condition Bandido II along, w/8" stock coil and a nice 6" Concentric mounted, for any participant to borrow ... or buy, and I don't think it will be coming home with me.

But my current detector battery does have multiple models in it because they are such excellent units, and have a few search coils I really prefer using, and as I have also done for decades, I like to have two or more models of the very same unit with me. Especially with models like the Makro Racer 2 and a few other Nokta/Makro models, because I keep different search coils mounted to them. They have my preferred start-up program settings saved and will start up in the search mode I am most likely to use with the attached search coil. That way I just grab the detector & coil combination I want when I arrive at a site and I don't waste time switching search coils and lower rods around. Oh, I still do that now and then, but seldom because I already have a detector with a mounted coil I want to use ready-to-go.

An example is my often used Racer 2 with the smaller coil already mounted and it starts up in 3-Tone mode due to the trashier environments where that works best, and another Racer 2 w/standard 7X11 DD mounted, and it starts up in the 2-Tone mode. With that coil set-up, I also know I can quickly select the 2-Tone Deep mode quite easily and that's the coil choice I would most often use with that mode set-up. I also keep my all-around performing Nokta FORS Relic with the 5½" DD at-the-ready to start up in Di3 (3-Tone mode) but have another Relic w/5½X10 Concentric coil mounted for a sparse-trash search in the Di2 search mode. I plan to get another Relic to keep a standard 7X11 DD mounted to and set-to-go, and if I had a 5½X10 coil for the Racer 2, I would probably nab a deal on another Racer 2 just to keep that coil mounted for more frequent use.

Then again, even I can get carried away with models I really like simply due to how well they work and how much I like them. I don't need another Relic to mount a 7X11 coil for open area searches because a FORS CoRe with the same size coil can handle all my needs for open area hunts with minimal trash, and that means I seldom encounter ferrous trash so the Iron Volume isn't a necessary 'need' and falls into the 'want' category for those search applications.

But I know what you mean, and the FORS Relic IS my #1 all-purpose detector, and is also complemented with a Racer 2. and these two models are part of several I keep in my vehicle, and I will be loading up a few more Nokta/Makro models tomorrow, with extra batteries, to get ready to head off on another detecting trip that I will wrap up with the WTHO and head back home on the 23rd. The Relic/Racer 2 team get a lot of use, for sure, simply due to the fact that they work so well, especially in the dense iron littered sites I most often hunt.

My Racer 2's will get more work-out the tail end of May and during June and July when the high desert head and current dense grassy weed growth limit my searches there and I will be doing more Coin & Jewelry Hunting in cooler shaded (I hope) parks and such.

Maybe you could thin out your Compadre and DeLeón and put that $$$ towards acquiring a Racer 2? Just a thought, but looking at your listed arsenal I know that's what I would do in a heartbeat. The other two would likely stay, serving purposes similar to my remaining and staying Tesoro models.

Yes, you currently have a very Functional set of detectors, even having two FORS CoRe's, and I see nothing wrong with that. Now, how many detectors did you have stuffed under your bed, hanging on a wall, in your vehicle or ???? about a year or year-and-a-half ago? Wasn't it something in the 13 to 17 detector count range? Glad you finally trimmed the excess stock once you realized what the Nokta and Makro models provide in function, performance and value. You are trending more to the Functionally Minded side of things, like ME :lmfao:, and becoming less Compulsive minded.

Now, off to Carl's Jr. for breakfast and then Walmart for some shopping. (Humm...now THAT seems to fit the Compulsive category a bit more so I still have some 'C' afflictions, I guess).

Well not sure about thinning out just yet. First I want to run them for a while to see which I get along with best
I like the deleon because it's tesoro beep and dig with the twist of the display. Without GB, I'm pretty much leaving the troy coil on because tesoro rebuilt/tuned that coil and then my units insides to that coil.
I didn't get to use it but one time before sending it in and they said that coil was so bad that they were surprised it even ran at all lol. But bow it's like a brand new coil. Should arrive by Friday I hope. So definitly want to get some time in with that. And depending how my cibola GB mod goes, I might do the same with my deleon to be able to tune it for all my other epsilon coils.

The compadre will most likely stay just for the fact that it's nice to just turn the knob and go sometimes like last week. Didn't wanna fuss around and wanted a relaxing hunt so for two days u used only that. Plus it's cheap and I wouldn't get much for it towards the racer2. In my opinion I'd rather have the compadre than the 100 I'd be lucky to get for it. Bow, if I could get all 160 back (never would happen) I can see it being worth dropping it.

The ace, I haven't even touched since I got my compadre, but it never fails that when showing a new person my detectors before a hunt and asking which they'd like to use, 9.5/10 times they pick that ace lol.

As for the cibola and bandido they arrive today.
As I said in another thread, the cibola was an accident when I bid on ebay, so I figured I'd make orange juice out of lemons and try modding it with the GB knob.

I'm not really sure what I'll do for now.

I ordered the 5.5X10 for my relic yesterday and kellyco swore they had two in stock when I spoke with them, but now it says it's a preorder, order on my account. They did that to me my first time purchasing with the lesche shovel and I was pissed. So I hope they ship it to me, but that's a whole other conversation lol.

I do like having extras that are easy for new people to use so they can focus on the hunt instead of the settings.

This season I will probably keep all mine I have to see which I like best and next year (hopefully the impact is released by then....lol) I can thin them out.

Time will tell.
Thanks for the reply!!
