To wot or not to wot????

I'm thinking about buying a wot for my explorer, is it as wonderful as claimed?
Any additional tips or tricks for the wot that I may want to know about??
Thanks,... Wild Bill

Wild Bill,
It definitely goes a inch or two deeper than the stock, and certainly has more ground coverage, and is commonly acknowledged as able to get coins on edge better than smaller coils.
What suprised me was its ability to find coins in iron trash filled sites. I did some air testing with a coin and a nail which suggested that it would be pretty close to worthless in these conditions; reality has proven otherwise many times over.
Have found many good coins with it. I think it is important to hit all productive sites from many different angles using different sized coils. WOT is good addition to any arsenel.

some of the sites I hunt are so iron infested that most people won't hunt there.
I have been able to pull a few silvers and indians out of the deep trash with my sovereign and explorer, but I know there's more there.
One site used to be a hockey rink and the trash ranges from just under the surface to a foot deep.
So I'm hoping the wot will be the ticket to punch through the iron and see the good ones.
Thanks again,... Wild Bill

I think the Wot has proven itself time and again and on beaches or large fields the coverage is super.Amazing how they make such a large coil and its as light as many coils much smaller. Certainly not for everyone or for every area but as Chis says a good addtion to your acc. coils and they really do work well.....

I've only had mine for a couple of months, but it really has impressed me. The EX has great target ID at depth, and the WOT appears to extend that ability deeper and wider. Do a comparative test with the stock coil and a friend using a WOT, using a dime at progressively deeper levels - you will be impressed too. I love it for those areas where things are deeper than 6-7 inches.

Wild Bill,
In iron infested areas (or any heavy trash) you pretty much have to give up the coverage; overlap you sweeps so you are only progressing a couple inches a time. Many times you can get a fairly decent signal in the hot spot but if you move back or forward a couple of inches you loose it. Almost always have to pin point by using the X method, and then many times you can only turn the coil ten or fifteen degrees and still be able to hear the signal. It's tough going.
Story I've told before is that I got the stock and 8" coil when I bought my XS. Bought the 5" and WOT second winter. Had been using the 8" primarily and thought the 5" would become my main coil. I was having lots of luck pulling coins from the trash. Didn't think I'd use the WOT at all, given everybody said it was made for clean areas. Went detecting in the spring and hit a trashy town square with the stock, the switched to the 8 without much luck. Then tried the WOT just cause I had never used it before. Started popping up Barbers and IHs from the trash. And have found that to be a common story.
But... There are many times the smaller coils will get ones the WOT can't, and the WOT is probably more directionaly dependent than the smaller coils in trash. After working a few trashy sites that have had dirt moved I'm convinced that we are still missing many, if not the majority, of targets due to masking. I would like to add one of the concentric coils to the mix. It's a bit counter intuitive to me but so was the WOT and others have said they were suprised by the finds they made.

I would not use my WOT in trashy parks without a Sunray X-1 probe (other high quality probes may help also). You may not need one on beaches but I use it there also. Many times digging holes in the trash, or for deep ones, the hole is a bit off and the target resides at the side of the hole, or deeper than the hole you dug. Then you have to know exactly where to make that final poke to retrieve the target. Digging coins by its nature occasionally results in damaging coins, but digging deepies without the X-1 will result in lots and lots time spent scraping around the hole, scratches on coins and lost $$$.

as a matter of fact, I started out with one on my Sovereign, and knew I had to have one for my Explorer as well,... I guess I got spoiled,... <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

Chris, you are right on the money when you said you have to go over productive sites from different angles with different coils. I have been hunting an old house built in 1820, I pulled many old coins fron the front yard including an 1864 2 cent piece and went back and forth with the 8" coil. I switched to 10 inch coil and quickly got an iron signal that sounded very round and full. I dug a plug and at the bottom ( about 6") was an 1802 large cent that had been sitting right on top of a large, rusty handmade nail. HH Randy
