Today's digs & a mystery object

What is on the sides of the ring? I think the ID of a soldering iron tip looks right.

If it was found in a School play area I would bet it is spike from either homeplate, or a pitching rubber.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I played baseball through college, and then coached 2 years in college so I've probably seen a few more of those than the average person.
