Tried a new beach today. Was suprised at how crowded it was (forgot today was a holiday). Spent about 3 hours in the wet sand to knee deep. Water was unproductive. Bagged myself $3.25 in clad, the usual pulltabs, bottle caps and scrap. Got two large hoop earrings. I was hoping for silver, but alas, they were junk. Also picked up a copper ring. Since this beach is closer to our urban area, the amount of rude and inconsiderate people was more than I was used to. Had the opportunity to meet another detectorist today. Don was his name and he is a regular at this beach. Don is an older gentleman and seemed friendly enough. Long time hunter. He even bagged himeself a nice citizen watch. Unfortunately, after Don went on his way, I had the opportunity to observe the craters that he left in the beach. A few were definite ankle breakers. I was approached by one of the state employees inquiring about Don, as they had recieved some complaints about his numerous unfilled holes. I didnt have the opportunity to see Don again. If anyone who hunts JBSP knows Don, maybe they can give him a heads up and encourage him to fill his holes before we find ourselves losing the right to hunt one of our premier beaches. If we can dig it, we best be able to fill it, or dont dig it at all. Well enough of my rant.... All in all a good day. Hopefully I will see gold in my scoop again soon....

But I do not understand why people complain about small holes that detectorists sometimes leave behind. Those craters some people dig that can hide a vehicle are ok and no one complains about them. What is good for one should be good for the other!......make other beach goers fill in their craters.

Ring is a ring :) I've run into people like that in the past... I try to fill their holes if I run into them...

Problem was they were those well defined holes in the wet sand a scoop width wide and maybe 2-3 scoops deep. Hard to see and deep enough to cause a real good injury. They definitely werent those wide sweeping holes that only a visually impared person could miss...

but like I said, I didnt see him the rest of the day, and this is a beach that is quite a distance from my house. It is not likely that I will be back there soon. Was hoping that some of the guys hunting up that way might see this, and know Don. Perhaps they can be more diplomatic than I.

When the little children dig the large holes in the beach (even if it was dug by dad), Then they are justified in doing so.....after all they are considered legitimate beach users (now stay with me here). Those of us swinging metal detectors are simply scavengers.....considered by many as "undesirables" that are gaining from other's misfortune.....Don't you think that that mentality would carry over to the authorities (ie. lifeguards, park rangers, police etc.)? I think that we as detectorists just have to be extra cognizant of filling our holes and make sure that we give no ammunition to the ignorant that would do us and our hobby/sport harm....in other words

JUST FILL YOUR HOLES EVERY TIME !!!!!! :detecting:
JMHO.....HH.....Brian

I saw some holes,

At my local beach, As I was hunting several people complained to me about all the holes left by someone else hunting the same beach, I asked the other hunter to fill his holes . He told me F--k Them! what could I do

That happened to me last year.. guy told me to blank off.. I found a park ranger and told him the guy wasn't filling his holes and the ranger kicked the guy off the beach and told him not to return.

Yes we do have "JERKS" out there that just care about themselves, that have to get in front of you to find that gold ring . Run up & down the beach like a A-- H---, & leave them great big holes, Well you know they don't give a dam about this great hobby of ours. Instead of getting into a conformation with this person, turn there A-- in to the rangers, then being the people that we are we will fill there holes, why you ask, because we ,us, care about this Hobby , & respect the right to be able to enjoy everything concerning to it. To all my fellow hobbiests , don't:argue: cuse at them , give them a great big smile,:) & we'll fill there holes. Good Hunting to everyone, & take time to smell the Roses.
