Well I had some time today and decided to take a drive to a small town about 35 mins away from my home. There is an area there that was once a place people would picnic, going back to 1860...right up until today.
Well, it turned out to be a bust due to some serious fill! HOWEVER, all was not lost. On the way there actually, I managed to take a wrong turn. I ended up on a road I didn't know in the middle of nowhere. I knew what direction I needed to go though and figured if I followed the road I would eventually end up in the general area. As I was driving I noticed a small church. I stopped and read the plaque..."1877"...well, the date was a good one....but the church was only about 6 feet from the road, and had a grass strip about 6' x 12'...and at first glanced it looked unnatural. I figured it had been disturbed. I almost didn't bother. Then I noticed an elderly couple at the cemetary across the road. I asked them about it and they told me to go ahead and hunt it was now town property and no longer in use.
I got my detector out and fired it up. I took two swings and got a nice hit at 6"...from that hole I removed 2 large cents and a fishscale. In that small strip out front of the church, and in only 15 minutes...I dug the following:
6 large cents...1882, 1913, 2 1916, 2 1918
1919 dime
1920 fishscale
I thought I'd save the sides and rear of the church for another day. I moved on to the picnic area which was a bust as I mentioned.
On the way home, I stopped at a tiny park...which had some serious disturbance. I didn't find anything ancient there...but I did find a first...a standing liberty quarter! Woohoo! I love american silver
It's a 1929...I also pulled out a couple of 1940's silver dimes and a broken ring as well. All in all, not a bad day!
The watch fob with the kingston courthouse on it I found a few days ago. The owner carved his name in the back "Fred Blake"...I tried to search his name but couldn't find him.
The
Thanks for looking and happy hunting!
