I went to a home I just got permission to hunt, a house in Lampeter, PA built in 1790. Chatted with the owners for a good hour or so, then with two people tagging along took a brief walk swinging outside the house. I was using the Excel, no headphones, sens at 9 and no discrimination. When I found something the owner took it and rushed inside to clean it up to see what it was... they were so excited to see this stuff come out of their ground!

I only dug shallow, clear signals, for the ground is very hard and dry and I was only doing a brief survey. The ground just outside old farm homes is typically very hard, and old items are often shallow.

I dug this brass thing below, it's filled with lead and two wires run through it and used to come out of the top... there is some kind of worn off tip at the pointed end.. could it be an old plumb-bob? The lead looks to be in layers inside... the teenager I was walking with thought it was a mortar shell... any ideas? I'll post it in the whatzit forum as well.

The flat button has a design on it, and a gold layer that's worn pretty much off. I also found part of a necklace with a charm of jesus on a cross. The owner took that and will ask around the family to find the owner, because it was just under the grass and recently lost.

I'll go back next time with the Coinstrike, headphones and some patience. Hopefully I can weed through the iron riddled ground and pick out a few more keepers. The owners also own a home two doors down, built in the early 1800's, and I can hunt that anytime as well.. woohooo :)

Not bad for a 20-minute quickie survey! :)

Good Hunting,

That button looks early, early 1800's coat button maybe?? Not sure what that other thing is...hope not some kinda bomb. Perhaps the swinging part of a grandfather clock that hangs down off a chain?
